I couldn't find any discussion on this question.

Issue is I had a harddrive crash now technician says I must be a new windows seven version that I can install Windows 7 ulimate on the new harddrive without access to the old operating system.

I read on the internet that you could install but you had to phone in and talk to a real live person to activate it.

Does anyone have the information on this?

Thanks to you all

Yep, you're right, call Microsoft and tell them what happened. Most of the time they're pretty cool, but if you've installed it a few times already, then they may say no.
I've done this a couple of times myself over the past 15 years - here's a thread - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-phone-7/14f1e69d-19c8-4eb2-813f-a11bd8e82675
If they say it's okay, they'll give you a code to enter while installing and you obviously have to be online and it'll register from there.
Good luck

Is Win7 so different from previous versions? The activation code is usually on a sticker on the computer case. Shouldn't be an issue unless you've already (re)installed the OS using that code on a different computer in the last month or so, or have done so a number of times already.

M$ is on a mission to stamp out pirated versions of their OSs going back to XP. So they are making things more difficult than in the past and are looking for any 'suspicious' activity. IF you have any problem here and have a legit M$ OS, just phone them and they should take care of you.
