In the best free utilities forum there are a few free ghosting software packages.

Has anyone actually tried them?

Thanks

Linux Ghost

Google Linux Ghost.

It's a great program. I replicated my son's hardrive using this program with no hassles whatever.

It's a free download, Sourceforge has it I think, created by a College prof and his class from Guam!!

You burn an ISO, load it into your CD/DVD drive and run it. It doesn't use your Operating System, so you can replicate your entire primary Drive with your Windows O/S on it!

Brilliant! I installed the new harddrive created by Linux Ghost and my son's machine (Windows XP) works flawlessly. He has his old hardrive as a backup in case the new one fails.

Seagate Disc Wizard

I've done the same with Seagate Disc Wizard in the past.
It came with all Seagate drives and was easy to use and at that time worked on non Seagate drives. Now I believe Seagate modified it so it will only work on their drives.

I ghosted XP on a couple extra drives in case the main drive failed. In the event of failure I'm up and running again in the time it takes to swap the bad drive with the good one.

Norton Ghost. Works with everything i have ever come across. I do a fresh install and all the updates Microsoft has to offer onto a clean hard drive and then ghost it to a drive in one of my pc's. I keep the original safe and install and update it from time to time. Once a year i ghost over the original updated copy to the pc again so i am working with a clean copy. Some programs cannot be ghosted without activation like Adobe CS2.

Ghosting is also a great way to back up everything.
