Handel's Messiah

What a wonderful 'pick-me-up' this piece of music is. I'm not religious in any sense but I can still appreciate what Handel has done here with a New Testament message of renewal and salvation.

He stated that he didn't want to merely entertain people but to make them better persons. A lofty ambition but, dammit, I think not too far-fetched for that musical genius.

I have the 1966 Phillips version with Sir Colin Davis conducting. An older but still lovely recording.

I'm not sure where "The seat of desolation, void of light." is (Scarborough, maybe?) but if you're local you might be interested in Tafelmusik's Production of Messiah. They do a wonderful Messiah every year just before Christmas.

They also have a Sing-along Concert

The best I ever attanded

The best Messiah Concert I ever attended is the one in 1986 with Kathleen Battle as the Soprano, and Andrew Davis conducting the TSO and the Mendelssohn Choir
