I agree. Halloween is a great time for the kids. It has been a staple in North American culture for who knows how long. Perhaps the thought of giving away free candy baffles the average immigrant. With that said, this only applies to lower income immigrants. I think the wealthy immigrants embrace the Halloween spirit and contribute to the whole idea. Many faces behind the doors that open up are chinese, indian, persian, japanese, korean, etc.

I love Halloween. I wish I could still trick or treat. Now a days, being older and all....I just call an SP and she'll trick my treat...or is it treat my trick? LOL :D

Actually Halloween is more offensive to homegrown Christians than it is to immigrants of other cultures and stuff... besides, new immigrants just respond with a  reaction more than anything, they then relax and join in the fun... unlike hardened bible-thumpers.

Teaching children to practice their "traditions", yet tone it down out of consideration for the beliefs of their peers is some pretty insane shit, indeed.

Seemingly, when the Irish immigrated to America in the mid eighteen hundreds.

For the same reason there is no longer any Christmas concerts in the public schools, nothing is staying the same for us anymore. I really do feel it is unfair that there is no Christmas concerts etc... yet you go to the school and they are told to learn all the others religions and cultures. There goes the policy of what is good for the goose is good for the gander. (shrugs)

disrespectful of Wiccans

TORONTO - Teachers should forego traditional classroom Halloween celebrations because they are disrespectful of Wiccans and may cause some children to feel excluded, says a Toronto District School Board memo sent to principals and teachers this week.

"Many recently arrived students in our schools share absolutely none of the background cultural knowledge that is necessary to view 'trick or treating,' the commercialization of death, the Christian sexist demonization of pagan religious beliefs, as 'fun,' " says the memo.

Entitled "Halloween at TDSB Schools: Scarrrrrry Stufff," the document seeks to clarify for teachers and principals the extent to which Halloween activities should be pursued in multicultural settings. In the past, the unsigned memo laments, schools have received "mixed messages" from the board regarding Halloween.

School board officials could not be reached for comment last night.

Citing calls by concerned principals and parents on the subject, the memo aims to make classroom Halloween celebrations consistent with the board's "equitable schools policies" and warns that "some students and their parents/ guardians might experience their first Halloween not as a 'strange surprise,' but a 'traumatic shock.' "

The memo goes on to remind teachers that, "Halloween is a religious day of significance for Wiccans and therefore should be treated respectfully."

For other students, "food products that are marketed heavily during the Halloween period" may conflict with dietary habits that children know from home. An alternative to eating sweets in class would be to "write health warnings for all Halloween candies."

The memo also warns teachers that "some students have had first-hand traumatic experiences of violence that make talking about death, ghosts, etc. extremely alienating."

way out in left field
Ok, so what's next? We stop teaching Darwinism and evolution in biology because it doesn't agree with catholicism? We will also stop teaching english because it might offend asian or middle eastern children? We also have to stop teaching Canadian history and start teaching the history of every other country on the planet, one class for each.

Halloween is a part of OUR culture, does not matter if you've recently arrived here or not, if you want to be a part of CANADA, learn CANADIAN culture...if you don't? GET THE FUCK OUT!

Goddam politicians without balls. Not wanting to offend anyone. Well this offends ME.....

BTW: Halloween USED to be about scaring and ghosts and goblins but when did a little girl dressed up as an angel become "scary"??? There are lots of costumes that aren't related to death and fear.....let's get a life and let kids be kids.....(that goes for the adult kids too lol)

I grew up with Halloween and never found it traumatic in kindergarten it was less scary costumes and by grade one it was totally understandable as I had already been out for Halloween etc... by high school yeah it was all get out and the more freeky the costume was the better. I see no problem with Halloween in schools as long as it is appropriate parties for appropriate ages. I still remember the Haunted house in grade six that our teacher put together the best. We went through putting our hands in different things and just the suggestion of what the items were made the items appear to be what was mentioned. We all had a great laugh afterwards. It will be a shame if we lose everything. Where do we write in to complain?

I don't remember schools being much involved in my Halloween as a kid, we simply took that night as our own and worked the streets to get as much loot as possible. We had to carry along a frickin' UNICEF box, that was the only school involvement - probably the beginning of trying to spoil the fun.

And, as such, we must appreciate EVERYONE'S customs and beliefs, including those in which we do not subscribe to.

So, that means that I appreciate, which I most certainly do, those of Zoroastrians, Hindi, Muslims, Jews, etc...., and they should, if we believe in a mosaic (which derives from Moses, by the way) they should appreciate mine. It is a much more enriching society when we celebrate our diversity, when others see our customs and learn from us and we see theirs and learn from them.

It is a two-way street which those who are blinded by political correctness do not see at all. Hoping against hope, I am hoping for some sanity and reason to prevail.

tboy... yer preaching to the choir... but it's already happening, the church is lobbying the government to have creationism taught in public schools alongside Evolution, and they're making strides.

Besides, even if the schools do impose a Halloween restriction in school, parents can always ignore that rule and have their kids dressup and go anyway, what kinda teacher would ban a kid from attending class or having fun if they're dressed up?
