Brits do not rinse and dry dishes with cloth after washing them with soapy water.

Our tiny homes don't have room for a dishwasher...because the washing machine (no room for a separate dryer) is traditionally kept in the kitchen.

That has nothing to do with not rinsing off the dirty soapy water, it's unhygienic.

Hey, when I was a boy scout leader at big camps:

you would ask the kids the scrub dirty dishes in 10l detergent water tub,
rinse in plain water that was changed daily ( it was a 150L barrel )
then a final dip in a 10L 2% bleach solution water tub.

Put the clean dishes of a camper in their mesh bag that had their name on it, and clothes pin it to a suspended rope line to dry.
If it rained overnight the dishes in the mesh bags were at least still clean to start the next day

Next morning put fresh water in the rinse after drawing the day's detergent water and from it.

That way even if the kid did not clean the dish well in the detergent, the belt and braces approach kept racoons from taking off with dishes to lick the residual fats off of them.

It's also a health hazard. It means that there is still soap on the dishes.

When eating off the plate, you're going to consume bits of dish soap chemicals which is not good for the body.
