I am sure he had alot to do with all those championships and not Jordan, Pippen, Shaq and Kobe.
Phil got to inflate his stats and rings by having some of the best ever play for him. Good coach IMHO, but put him on the Raptors this year and there would of been no improvement.
Put Larry Brown or Greg Popovic on the Raptors and there would be improvement. Those guys coach basketball the way it was meant to be played. I know a lot of the casual fans despised the 05 Finals of Spurs v. Pistons but as a purist and a fan of basketball the way it should be played I loved that series. Those two teams just played the game the right way. Only problem with Larry Brown is that after a few years he will be looking for his next opportunity. I think one of his goals is to be the first coach to head coach for 30 different NBA clubs.

You guys see that hat Dr. Phil was wearing in the post game ceremony for the trophy presentation. He had on this yellow baseball cap that had the roman numeral 'X' on it with all the years on the back that he won titles.

Based on the 10 championships he's won, he can be considered one of the greatest coaches of all time. I would say he's also the coach who has played with some of the greatest players of all time. He was very lucky in that aspect to have Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Kobe and Shaq all in their primes. But there are much better coaches out there than him.

How do you think his record would be if he was coaching the LA Clippers instead of the LA Lakers. Obviously not that good, so in reality he did have it easier than all of the other coaches.

He is the Dave Andreychuk of NBA coaches. Andreychuk scored all of those goals and was lucky each time, so was Phil Jackson with each NBA victory.

It's funny that this thread is almost becoming the Phil Jackson thread. I think that Red would have to be considered the greatest coach in history.

I think that Pat Riley should be considered to be right up there as well.

He had Russell, Havlicek, Cousy - the best players in their time. It should be best coach in their era, not all time.

How about the coach that has the most improved team time after time?

That would be one of the largest compliments and achievements I would think. Just my opinion.

So let me make a point. If anyone can name a championship team that didn't have great players please provide one.

As stated Red had great players and so did Pat Reily. Damn, Reily and KC Jones had 3 Allstars each at one time.

Another question. How many championships did Kobe and Jordan win without Phil Jackson?

I'm not saying he's the greatest but by winner more NBA championships than any other coach alive or dead, he has to be in the conversation.

I'm surprised that nobody has said Greg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs...an amazing winning percentage and 4 titles...

Phil Jackson's motivating qualities are unsurpassed..but many could have done the same with the talent that was handed to him!

I'm not disagreeing with you but that's easy to say. Again, how many titles did Jordan and Kobe win without Phil?

Too difficult to name the best coach. Red had a stacked lineup and even though I don't like how Phil comes across at times, he is a very good coach.

The best coaches should be more based on which teams had the same or similar lineups, brought in a new coach and improved drastically.

A very good example of this would be Mike Woodson of the Atlanta Hawks. His first year I believe Atlanta won 13 games or something like that and he has been the coach for 5 years now and the team has increased their wins total every year without drastically changing their lineup. Basically, they had had the same nucleus of players for a while now and they are improving every year.
