Hello All.

I am thinking of staying at the Grand when I get to Toronto for some relaxation and a little hobbying. I have heard it is not in the nicest area, any comments.

Thanks

It is not a pretty area and borders on some poor housing. Traditionally the area is the stroll...but the cops have been and still are a presence. The hotel itself is great....and a very good dining room. It is on a main street and it is an easy walk to Yonge and Filmores strip club...if that is your thing.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay there, but I would not leave my car on the street in that area over night. Make sure it is secure in the hotel parking.
Have fun!

The area is not the worst, but of course I am a true urbanite and lived downtown most of my life. My apartment is a modest, clean little one-bedroom in a converted Victorian heritage home - quite nice and not what one would expect when driving through the area. Regardless, I LOVE living here!

The only suggestions I have for you is if you are out walking don't make eye contact with anyone at night. Also, a previous poster suggested you avoid walking east - for now, thats a good suggestion. Historically there has always been a police presence on my street, which (ironically enough) I like. The crackheads are much more conspicuous than I am. With the construction on Dundas right now the police are MIA! There is an elementary school and a large park with a community centre in the neighbourhood and almost every day lately when I walk by any of them there is is a crackhead right in front smoking his/her pipe - with kids playing right beside them! Ugh!! But basically, the druggies will leave you alone. They are too focused on their drugs.

Anyway.. my little rant... The Grand is a fabulous hotel! Great chicken at Georges around the corner and they are open until 5am. Just be careful and use your Spidey-sense. ;)

Grande Hotel

The area is fine. Also across the street is Ramada, not as nice inside but pretty good rates.

The Really Cool Wife and myself always use Hotwire or Priceline for our fun in Toronto. Last weekend got the King Edward for $75 a night on Priceline. If you go to Betterbidding.com, this sight gives you an idea of what hotel you will get at what price. I have used if for travel all over US and Canada. Both services, Priceline and Hotwire guarantee the neighborhood and quality of the hotel, not the specific hotel until you actually commit to the purchase. Betterbidding helps you know ahead what hotel it will be, but while it has always been right for me there is no guarantee. Always stay in a 4 star or better and always pay less than $100 per night downtown, and much less when we play by the airport.

The Grand's a favourite for lower-budget film productions looking for an OK place to put their fading Hollywood or rising Canadian stars. Accommodation and prices both good.

TO's most recent shootings were on the other side of town, just north of the Convention Centre, the Holiday Inn and Crown Plaza,. Miles away.

You will have no trouble at the grand, whatsoever. I just stayed there four days, am going back two more times soon. The SP can come in without being questioned; the elevators require no keys. In fact, you can go directly from the underground parking directly to the room. It is one of the easiest hotels for what you have in mind.
As I said in a recent posting, this place is a gem. The two rooftop hot tubs are a nice place to get warmed up.

I love the Grand hotel. They have a wonderful roof top deck with hot tubs.

It is a cheap taxi fare from downtown.

You are close to Filmores (a fave of mine but I like girls who are edgier).

No one seems to check out the coming and goings of guests or visitors.

I've been there once, it's a good place. I liked the rooftop hot tub, it was amazing in the middle of December. The restaurant and lounge are nice, you can drop into Filmores easily as well.
