So the message reads...

Incognito mode turned on

When incognito mode is on, Maps on this device will not

  • Save your browse or search history in your account, or send notifications
  • Update your Timeline
  • Use your activity to personalize Maps
Turning on incognito mode in Maps does not affect how your activity is used or saved by internet providers, other apps, voice search, and other Google services. Incognito mode is not intended to stop location sharing, please check your settings.
Do you trust this haha.

It doesn't add your searches to your history on your phone, and it doesn't use your personal data while you're using it (e.g. you can't navigate to someone in your Contacts, but you can type in their address if you remember it), but of course the data is still going back and forth to Google, and Google still knows it's you. If you're really worried about keeping certain information from certain people who may share your bed, Incognito Mode isn't going to be the silver bullet; I couldn't swear that she can't see the information in other ways, if she has access to your account. 🙂

It's funny... I was tempted to write about Maps IM recently and didn't bother, but I think it actually has another issue: I don't think it has the same degree of accuracy as "normal" mode. For my first hobbying adventure in quite a number of years, with this new technology in hand, I decided to use IM to find the spa I was going to, and I must have driven around for 20 minutes, with Maps swearing my destination was right there, but I couldn't find it. (There were other spas in the area, confusing me even further; was it just named differently?) I even messaged the place and asked if the name was on the building, and I could tell the girl who was messaging back was doing her best not to call me an idiot as she said, yes, the name is quite clearly there on the building. 🤣

I was on the verge of giving up but decided to try taking IM off, and lo and behold, found it immediately -- a couple of blocks away from where IM kept pushing me.

I wanted to try again the next time I went to a different place, but it turned out the place had changed their address, so I can't blame Maps Incognito Mode for that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ha, location fuzzing would definitely be an interesting feature, but not if the app didn't tell you about it 🤣
