besides the high end Precor's, any recommendations?

heard great things about smooth fitness.

also heard to stay away from nordic track, supposely their service and quality really went downhill.

I own a Precor and it is worth every single penny I paid. I noticed recently there are a lot of second hand ones for sale in Calgary. If you're interested in one you could always see if there's a second hand Precor in your price range.

I was considering that but I keep hearing that precor's really do not work the upper body compared to other ellipticals.

Has this been the case?

I think ellipticals from precor are amazing. My buddy has one, and he swears by them and my gym has them. You use an elliptical for a cardio workout to get your heart rate up to burn the fat and pump the blood. Don't look for an upper body workout from it no matter who makes them. If it's an upper body workout you are looking for hit the weights ;).

There's no doubt that my Precor is simply a leg machine - I don't have those ski-pole-like attachments on mine. I bought mine simply because I wanted a leg and butt workout and my Precor is the absolute best I've found at giving me that.

Oh, I know nothing can beat the weights for upper body but from my understanding, I've been told precor does absolutely nothing to the upperbody at all, while some ellipticals work out some of the muscules in that area during use.

All in all, I just want to burn off some pounds (love desk jobs) and make sure they stay off with a regular schedule of working out on one.

I've dropped a lot of weight in the last 2 years and I do credit the Precor with a lot of that. You will drop weight if you lose it and it's a relatively easy weight loss in the respect that it's not going to wreck your knees or be hard on your joints.

Good to hear, yyc. Congrats!

How much did you pay for your Precor?

I've only been able to find it online in the USA.

I bought mine at a place in Calgary called Fitness Depot. I found it there after doing a lot of shopping - call the bigger fitness places in your area and I'm sure you'll find one. I think I paid around 2 grand for mine. It's a model or two above the middle of the road model but underneath a gym quality model.

I've checked out Consumer Reports for their reviews on ellipticals; they state that Precor, Life Fitness and Nautilus are the best, followed by the Schwinn 418 (good quality for a cheaper price). All can be found at Fitness Depot,I believe. They also stated ones produced by Icon Fitness (which manufactures Pro-Form, Reebok and Nordic-Trak) are generally lesser quality . I think you get what you pay in this case. Hope this helps!

Wow, 2 grand CDN for a Precor?

That's a damn good deal. What model was it? Was it used or new? When did you buy it?

Yeah, I bought a one mth sub to consumerreports.org to see what they had to say and I read that article.

Thanks tho.

I wish they included the Smooth ellipticals in their review as I've seen great reviews everywhere for these devices but since Smooth brands themselves as a "internet company", call me cynical but I wonder if some of those reviews are just viral marketing.

Which one of these is it?

Thanks again...

No problem. The answer is "none of the above". These are all new models. Mine looks a lot like the bottom of the three shown but it's not the exact model. I suspect these newer models are much more advanced than mine.

Ahhh.

Do you still know what the exact model number is?

Thanks again for the prompt replies. :)

Jesus Christ you're high maintenance. Reminds me of being married.

Anyway, it's a Precor EFX 5.17

I've been using my Diamondback for several years and have found nothing that compares. Very smooth rotation and has all of the features that you'll need. No need to break the bank. I suggest either the 600 or 800 model.
