i was born and raised in the area... it is a nice train ride but, it all depends on what you are expecting...

it's great for photography and it's usually a little cooler there in July as Lake Superior hasn't quite warmed up yet... good fishing up that way and also there might be a chance to see some wildlife (moose, timberwolves, etc...)

Gee, thanks dajodo 2, for that cleverly-worded and helpful piece of advice.
What's the matter? Couldn't get laid in northern Ontario?

Drive up to Tobermory & take the ferry across to Manitoulan Island, then continue the drive to the Soo. The Agawa Canyon trainride is pretty cool & the Canyon itself is nice. Do it in the autumn when the leaves are changing colour & its really scenic, but like goodtime said, book ahead.

I'll be doing the Polarbear express trainride, which heads up to Moose Factory on the shore of James Bay, in a few weeks.

But if your so inclined, and want a real adventure, take a week to ten days and drive up to the Quebec crater in the Ungava Peninsula of northern Quebec. Unforgettable!!!!

way out in left field
Actually, CN's Canadian train ride from BC to Halifax is supposed to be THE way to see Canada. Although I'd go positively batty being on a train that long......

I found it really funny how in Northern Ontario, there are communities that have no roads and if they need the train to stop, they stick a flag on the pole outside the "station" lol.....(or at night they use a lantern to flag the train down).....

Gee, thanks dajodo 2, for that cleverly-worded and helpful piece of advice.

You know you're in bad shape when even miners won't even touch you lol....

Ok, Valerie Pringle. Regular fare starts at $4,000 & 1st class was about double that. Price probably went up much more now. It's two seperate trains change @ Union station. Travelscape often rerun Pringle's CN journey.

You may want to just do the BC to AB skip the flats then Mtl to Halifax for scenery.

Unless I'm mistaken that crater has no road access to get to it.
You are correct sir, there is no direct road access to the crater, but there are roads throughout the region servicing alot of the Nunavik Inuit communities. Falconbridge ran a mine in the area, Randall or Ransom or something like that & my stepdad was a bigwig with a company that produced drilling/mining equipment. He took us kids up north, we stayed in the finest 3-star hotel in the region & had a tour arranged through an Iniut air-charter. The area is vast, treeless tundra, and it wasn't uncommon for scientific or environmental expeditions, or even a film crew doing documentaries or travelogues, to take a caravan of SUV's to the lake. It was the year 2000; people have been going to that region for a hundred years & the Iniut have been getting around for even longer. My stepdad had the means to make it happen, but just about anybody can arrange a tour up there. The top of Mount Everest is a lot, LOT more difficult to get to, but look how many expeditions go there.

Actually, come to think of it, and thinking about Doinkers opinion on the Moose factory tour, the crater itself was really no big deal - a big round lake with really clear water. But the trip was really really cool.

And a final P.S. I was in my mid-teens at the time, so I didn't check out the hobbying scene in any of the Inuit towns, so I can't report if there was any mileage to be had. Sorry
