My friends girlfriend is learning a second language so that she can speak with his parents since their english isn't very good. My friend (and I) both think this is something good and it shows that she is serious about the relationship, my friend has no problem with her doing this and is impressed that she is willing to do this. However his ex-girlfriend from 4-5 years ago says she is a "fake" for doing this and that she is just trying to impress the parents.

How do you fellow terbites feel about this ????

Why....

...would this be a concern of yours OR the ex girlfriend?

How old are the people involved?

BTW...there is nothing wrong with "trying to impress" the parents of someone whose family you might be joining in the future. If the ex-GF were a bit more mature she would understand that...and might not be the "ex"...

what language is it? I think it's great that she'd do that to try to communicate the parents. By showing an interest, she'll win them over, and she'll learn something in the process. It's win win in my opinion. Maybe if the ex showed some initiative like that, she wouldn't be the ex.

Be afraid be very afraid of GF's who speak a second language. When she switches from English to Italian or Russian, it means you are dead meat and you ain't getting any stuff tonight or ever.

Learning a new language is not an easy task so I am gonna say that the ex is just jealous and lazy and a bitch.
You must know her ! This ex hasn't had a job in her 30 years, and yes she is a bitch !

trying this hard to impress his parents is enough to say she is very serious, nothing wrong with a girl trying to impress her boyfriend's parents

Good for her.

But why is the parent's English so poor?

I'm always fucking amazed when I meet people who have lived in Canada for 50 years and they barely speak English, or not at all even. (For some reason Portuguese women are the worst for this - it's like they REFUSE to learn to speak English.)

My Grand father got dumped off the boat at age 16 from Russia to work at Stelco and couldn't speak a word of English. Not only did he learn to speak English, but to read and write it also. Self taught at that.

Many immigrant Portugese women never leave the home so they don't really mix with the broader population. This changes with the first generation because they go to English schools and then later many work outside the home and mingle with the broader population. By the second generation, they will have almost lost their Portugese language and have assimilated into Canadian society.

His ex is trying to sow hatred and discontent!

He should know a good thing when he has it. More power to his current significant other!

It's damn hard the other way! Hence I have a great deal of respect for him!

in my pants, where there's a party
Being from a non-English speaking family, I would say this is a wonderful thing for the girl to do. It shows interest in his roots which, for most 1st and 2nd gen immigrants, is quite important. It's not fake in the least. It shows respect.

If a girl I'm dating starts asking me how do you say "..." in Polish, I generally start thinking she's a keeper. Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I've dated anyone like that.

Your grandfather was lucky, he was young. The older you are the harder it is to learn a new language.
