Germans are looking to firewood for energy as natural gas prices soar

Skyrocketing prices for natural gas have Europeans scrambling for alternative energy sources. In Germany, where households face a 480 euro rise in their gas bills, people are resorting to stockpiling firewood.

The fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sunk Europe into the worst energy crisis in decades. From Italy to the UK, governments are racing to replace natural gas supplies from Russia and curtail the higher costs for industry and households. But consumers, too, are having to adapt, from cutting back on showering to firing up the chimney.

The German word for firewood, “brennholz”, reached peak search volume on Google in mid-August:

The rising cost of natural gas and firewood

Almost 50% of homes in Germany are heated by natural gas, with another 25% using heating oil. In the past, less than 6% used firewood.

That share is set to be higher this year. As natural gas prices soared, so have those for firewood and wood pellets:

Heating furnaces and wood stoves are also selling out.

Suppliers of the raw material are struggling to keep up, leading to scarcity of firewood. Earlier this summer, Germany’s Federal Firewood Association said the market was all out of wood.

The lion’s share of firewood used in Germany—80% according to the association—is typically sourced domestically. Now German firewood suppliers are buying from Poland, leaving some residents in both countries to collect brushwood. To prevent panic-buying, one seller has been rationing purchases to three boxes of wood at a time.

The process for drying out wood is long, compounding the ability to meet demand. Ideally, it takes six months to a year, because the more moisture wood contains, the less efficient it is at burning.

Over the long run, the firewood rush also raises environmental concerns. Trees do not replenish quickly and are not a viable substitute for replacing oil and gas, according to scientists. The fumes from burning wood also contain toxic chemicals.

Although Germany’s government deems burning wood for fuel as carbon-neutral, experts say the designation is not clear-cut. The combination of burning wood and cutting down forests may increase carbon emissions.

Holy cow, burning wood is even more damaging to the environment
and climate than burning coal.

They can always go back to burning furniture. I got to say, watching this gives me great satisfaction. 👍

Pretending this has anything to do with Germany going green! Get real.

It is caused by Germany not wanting Russian hydrocarbons anymore.

Yes, it always comes down to Putin. It has nothing to do with Merkel 's energy policies in the previous decade. None whatsoever.

Its accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels.
Which is why Canada is making a deal for hydrogen and not LNG.

Get real yourself
They shut down thier coal and nuclaer plants and invested gabillions in unreliables.
Only to find out they were unreliable & can not meet demand.

The sad thing is this mess was predictable
Green energy policy is a complete failure, >>>>>> because it is idelogically driven & ignores risk based assesment

How Much Is Power in Europe? It’s Now Equal to Oil at $1,000 a Barrel - Bloomberg

It is caused by Germany not wanting Russian hydrocarbons anymore.
Thats is odd as the Germans agreed to buy Russian Nat Gas before the invasion
Why would anyone agree to buy something they do not want ?

Equally fooish is beleiving there wiil be a 'transition' from FF to unreliables
As the german example shows , it aint going to work

Those pushing hydrogen are in for a huge disappintment

Generally hydrogen can be made two ways
  1. steam reformation of Nat gas - very energy intensive
  2. electrolysis - very energy intensive
To transport it as a liquid it needs to be compressed -very energy intensive
The energy inputs are greater than the energy generated by a fuel cell- It is a really bad green idea

The process wastes energy in a world to be starved of enegy by a different really bad green idea
Stupid compounded

The proposed solutition to the transport issue is to convert it ammonia so it can be shipped as a liquid
WTF ??

an oil spill makes a mess & a bigger problem if it ignites , limited by how far the liquid spiil can travel
an anhydrous ammonia spill ???? - Yikes head for the hills
-its corrosive to skin, eyes & lungs and its volaitile & thus will impact a much larger area than the oil

The voliumes which would be required are staggering relative to current ammonia production

Hydrogen is another pipedream that can not displace FF

That is what happens when you listen to the frauds on the left. We said for years and years to supply more oil and gas from the west(ethical oil). But the frauds demonized us and the fools listened to the frauds. Now they are looking for firewood.

Never believe the frauds on the left.

Science deniers are only about 7% of the Canadian population.
There aren't that many of you left.
Most people can see the shit happening to the climate with their own eyes and know something has to be done about it.

Gathering firewood is a time honored activity. It brings families together, gets you closer to nature and it's a great exercise. Not to mention, wood is a renewable resource. Note to self: must invest in the hot water bottle manufacturers. 😆

"We"? "Us"?

Are you part of the Global Cabal that controls everything and just biding your time on a hooker review forum to keep your "common man" disguise in practice?

Are you serious or just being czarcastic?

A clear example of the frauds. Just because you decide to transition to green, does not mean that you have to transfer the remaining trillions of dollars that will still be spent on energy during the transition to countries like Russia and iran. But that is what the stuoid people decided to do. And now, all that extra money that we could have had during our transition has gone to places like Russia. Our emergency rooms close while their artillery fires that money into Ukraine.

Smart people know that it is wise to separate a transition to green energy from letting whatever remaining money that is still spent on the old energy being spent on us.

True, conservatives were really f'ing stupid in Canada and let the oil money go to corporations instead of being nationalized or starting a fund like Norway did.
Same with the US.

Russia is using all their oil money to fund a war to steal land for food, but now they're down to buying shells from North Korea.
Even Saudi Arabia is being smarter, using their money to fund their own transition to renewables.
