"Vaccine improvement is expected to take center stage in the Bush administration's preparations for a worldwide flu outbreak, with a potential travel ban and restrictions on global commerce part of the contingency planning"

Well, you know where George W. Bush Jr. will place his restrictions on Americans. All the countries where Americans can get laid and have fun. No restrictions on Americans travelling inside the USA, however, he just doesn't have that power. Or even any restrictions on China, where this damn thing started and is all over the place!! In fact, this junk from this bogus President is another scare tactic to the 2006 elections. Mind you, there'll be no restrictions on travel to and from Iraq!! Innoculate the f'n birds, that's who sick, damn it!!

Anyone remember his bogus innoculate to all Americans for Small Pox? What a jerk. What a moron! Where's the indictments on this administration! I want growth!

Oh well, I wasn't planning on going to Canada or any international travel until the Spring, after the snow melts. Maybe by then there will be a vaccine. No Avian Flu in Vegas for my Thanksgiving trip.

Quack...Quack.....right..just go back to bed...

To think that this is not going to matter..is like whistling in the dark!!
Of course it matters. However running around shutting borders or issuing mass vacinations won't fix anything. This is just one of many health issues that the 1st world nations love to nash their teeth over.

60 people have died as of this "pandemic." That is a very small number compared to the billions living with far nastier bugs, worms, germs, and virii. Why aren't we all wringing out hands over them?

How is it cheaper to replace governments, bottle up others and condemn whole religions than to send 230,000 medics to treat the needy?

Because fear sells...

It's all about $7.1 billion (USD), not about keeping Americans healthy.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4396898.stm

Bush Jr. wants $7.1 billion from Congress on the "likelihood" of a pandemic. This pork pig says it's "likely" the US will all get sick. I say it's MORE likely that George W. Bush Jr. and Dick Cheney will both be indicted BEFORE all of America gets sick. $ 7.1 billion to help America from getting sick. A bunch of birdshit (excuse the pun)!!

How 'bout $7.1. billion to the levees in New Orleans. How about $100,000 just to me alone!! Oops, that can't happen, they just wasted $80 billion in New Olreans for $100 million in secure levees that even Donald Trump has requested to build for that price. Another $200 billion for the fake war in Iraq because it was "LIKELY" America was to face an immanent threat.

This administration can't be believed or trusted from any-side. Reject this administration and move forward.

George W. Bush Jr. wants to stop Americans access to clean safe sex!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sustained person-to-person spread of the bird flu or any other super-influenza strain anywhere in the world could prompt the United States to implement travel restrictions or other steps to block a brewing pandemic, say federal plans released Wednesday.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reject George W. Bush Jr. and his lying, doctoring intellegence/evidence administration. They can be contained with indictments that have killed 2000+ American soldiers and wounded 10,000 more, based on a "super flu" as an "immanent threat". That's worse than the common cold.

Notice in George W. Bush Jr.'s plan, no where does it say to wash your hands. Travel restrictions because someone's cock-a-too is having safe sex! The real reason. And don't be surprised if George W. Bush Junior issues a mandate banning chicken soup. Will someone take his temperature up his asshole?

Hmmm.....Maybe/maybe not! Don't keep pigs in the house!!

" The lack of sustained human-to-human transmission suggests that this AH5N1 avian virus does not currently have the capacity to cause a human pandemic. But, given the known potential for antigenic shift—either from a gradual process of adaptive genetic mutation within the virus or by a snap gene reassortment with a human influenza A virus6—the virus could acquire the mechanism for rapid human transmission and cause explosive global spread, facilitated by current air travel. Pigs and humans seem to be the "mixing vessels" for genetic exchange when coinfected by both animal and human flu viruses. Close domestic proximity of fowl, pigs, and people facilitates this, a situation common in Asia."

" Early mass use of neuraminidase antiviral drugs has also been recommended as a containment strategy for any local nascent human pandemic in Asia.7 So a pandemic may occur some time in the future, but not necessarily linked to bird flu."

I wouldn't count on the fact that this bug wont mutate to a lethal virus. It already has transferred to humans in SE Asia but it has shown that it doesn't spread readily - lucky for us since so far it's kill rate is 50%.

My understanding of the 1918 pandemic is that it evolved from a bird flu from SE Asia but didn't prove lethal to humans until it hit Spain.

The problem with bugs like this is all it needs is for human host to have another type of flu and these two bugs to exchange DNA to create a super bug. Bird flu's are very adaptable and just because it didn't find a compatible bug in SE Asia doesn't mean it wont find one in Europe or North/South America.

As long as this bug was in SE Asia it was contained, but now we see that it is spreading to birds throughout Eurasia.

This bird flu has been an issue in SE Asia for three years now and the fact that this made senior Politicians to stand up and take notice doesn't mean we are safe.

Well bite my ass!!!!!

"For it to become dangerous to humans, it has to go through a pretty significant genetic change. If you put this in perspective, it's not going to happen. For a person to be infected now, it appears that the exposure level has to be astronomical," Butcher said.

"While we are putting all our attention on this avian influenza, another virus is going to come up and bite us in the bottom," he said.

For people who like to bury their head in the sand and ignore the problem, the above link is fine. The attached link gives a more realistic look at this problem.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avian_flu#H5N1

While your scientist is entitled to his opinion, the WHO doesn't share that view.

http://w3.whosea.org/en/section316/Section503/Section1861_10453.htm

Lastly, it is not unlikely that a virus can find the right DNA combo to make it lethal to humans. It's a numbers game, the more infected birds there are the more likely they will come in contact with a person that has a mild flu virus that mutates.

So put your head in the sand and pretend nothing is wrong cause I'm going to put my money on the people who are actually paid to worry about this stuff. If in the end it proves out that you were right, well goody for you but I won't take that chance.
