Gene Hackman retired from acting over a decade ago and it's all Ray Romano's fault. Since then he's been living in New Mexico and only made an appearance on Diners, Drive Inns and Dives.

Clint Eastwood attempted to lure him back with Gran Torino, but Hackman declined Walt Kowalski. Hackman escaped a broken by becoming a US Marine. When he got his honourable discharge his counselor suggested that he take up acting to help him reintegrate into civilian life. It was the best advice he ever got.

So what are his best films...there are so many:

1. The Conversation
2. The French Connection
3. Mississipi Burning
4. Unforgiven
5. The Royal Tannenbaums
6. The Poseidon Adventure
7. Hoosiers
8. Night Moves
9. The Quick and the Dead
10. Bonnie and Clyde

Ironically it was his long time friend Peter Boyle who persuaded him to make Welcome to Mooseport.

Hmmm .... definitely would not have 'Poseidon' on my list.
I really liked 'Crimson Tide' and 'No Way Out', also got a chuckle or two from 'The Replacements'.

Awesome actor. I wonder if there are health issues or he has just had enough.

Eastwood was great in Gran Torino. He (Eastwood) reminded me so much of my own father it was surreal. I was watching Gran Torino and I kept thinking about my own late father. A couple of weeks later, I went to my sister's house and she says to me, "go see Gran Torino" and I told her that I had and she says to me, "Clint Eastwood reminded me of dad". Tough guy, nice lawn, didn't bother anyone, same jacket and pants.

With respect to Hackman, he was brilliant in Unforgiven. Absolutely brilliant (so was Eastwood and Freeman).

Question, why did Ray Romano end Hackman's acting days???

If being an asshole means getting the best out of your co-actors then that's the right kind of asshole to be.

Denis Farina must have enjoyed this...for an ex-Marine Gene sold this well.

Except lots of actors get the best out of the ones they work with, without being an asshole.

Mr. Hackman usually played pretty "hard" roles, would maybe stay in character between scenes.

Or, he's just an asshole who played "hard" roles...
Come on, give him the benefit of doubt. If he had been real awful, he would have had such a long career.

Wow I didn't realize Hackman hasn't acted in 11 years. What a shame. One of the best actors since I've been born and definitely one of my favorites. Hoosiers and Mississippi Burning are two of my ATF films because of him. And obviously his role as Popeye Doyle in French Connection is stellar. Let's not forget Scarecrow alongside Al Pacino - won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 73. Other notable performances for me

The Firm - Avery Tolar
Runaway Jury - Rankin Fitch
Uncommon Valor - Col. Rhodes

Heck I even loved him in Narrow Margin with Anne Archer. Has this guy even put up a dud? What an amazing career.

WTF did Hackman die?
Why would you think that? I started this thread because I miss him, obviously others do as well.

I still wonder what he would have done with Walt Kowalski in Gran Torino. Obviously Clint was very good in the role but GH can bring that extra elan. And I've heard that his acting master classes at the U of New Mexico has a waiting list.
