Today I was at a local independent gas station, I have a winter beater nothing super good for the season so I buy regular gas, gas girl comes out saying there is no more regular. When this happened in the past at big oil stations I was told I could have supreme at regular price. But not here. Is that a law or just a (rare) good deed by the gas companies???

I have had super offered to me when the regular pumps emptied out. I suspect that it does not really cost that much more to make super as compared to regular gas. I also suspect that the reason why the gas stations have different prices in different areas is that they will increase prices to discourage buying because the tanks are at low levels and lower prices
when they are full. That way they can fill up tanks on a regular schedule one area at a time, saving them expense and run around. Of course sometimes tanks will run out. that is when they will offer you the super grade gas at regular prices.

Yes I know that, but are they required to offer the lower price is the question, not why they do.

No, they are not required to do it by law. It is a matter of courtesy to keep the customer happy.

The gas stations don't have to sell super for regular prices if they run out of regular any more than the grocery store has to sell you a larger product for the smaller product price if the smaller product sells out. Gas stations do it for PR, which they typically lack.

I sell gas, not normally for cars, but a different market and only sell super(hi test) so I normally only get the price updates for super, but I believe the cost of super to be a fairly narrow spread, like 2-3 cents per litre more than regular... So selling super @ regular prices probably just eats up the profit margin, and they are basically selling @ cost... I guess the small independent station wasn't willing to sell @ cost to keep it's customers happy
