I have had a Garmin GPS with telephone bluetooth connection for ~ 3 years. The cellphone bluetooth was working very good but I was having problems with the lost satellite occasionally dropping out - as Murphy's law dictates - just when I needed it the most.

I recently purchased the Garmin Nuvi 2595. It is a 5" GPS with traffic, lane illustrations, construction, free map updates, bluetooth, Android data link and voice recognition. The programming the saved places was much more intelligent than my earlier model and the voice recognition works well. It is nice instead of fumbling with menus to just speak where you what to go. The first annoying feature is that the text to voice (street names) is much worse that my older model was. I have switched to the male US because the female is so bad.

The biggest problem is with the bluetooth connection. I paired the phone with the bluetooth but the volume on the incoming audio was very low and almost inaudible with outside traffic noise. After one week - I notice the bluetooth would not connect. Everytime I try to turn on bluetooth on the Garmin, it turns itself back off after 30 seconds.

I have not had time to contact Garmin support but the internet indicates that the bluetooth with low volume and bluetooth 30 second disconnect have been Garmin problems for some time. Has anyone had a similar experience ? I was going to take this unit back to Best Buy if it is unrepairable even though I like the basic GPS features. It is a mystery why Garmin didn't address the bluetooth problems when they surfaced a few years ago.

Assuming this is a product trait and I need a new GPS, is there a TOM Tom or Magellan device with similar features but a working Bluetooth ?

Give Garmin support a call. Have found their phone support excellent.
Recently got the same unit as you after reading many glowing reviews on it and am very pleased with it. Believe Garmin 2595 features are on par with GM OnStar with voice command and a lot cheaper. Plus it is portable able to be moved to any vehicle....;)

Did much research before buying and found Garmin rated better and more intuitive to use than TOM Tom or Magellan.

Stupid off topic question, but if you are using Android data plan for your Garmin why not simply use Google Maps…. it's pretty damn good.

I've used it occasionally when I'm travelling (business trips) and considered it when my existing Garmin started loosing satellites. A few things that I would miss is traffic rerouting, avoidance settings (e.g. toll roads) and the hassle of setting up my phone instead of just getting in my car and telling the GPS what to do.

As a followup - I set everything in front of me preparing to call Garmin and it worked so I didn't call. It's now in the car and it recognizes my phone every time as soon as it starts up. My problem now is that I wish the bluetooth volume was a little louder - I'll probably call Garmin support for that.

The android app link seems more like a sales gimmick. I can look for places on the app but I can just as easily ask the Garmin by voice command without taking out the phone. The only aspect that intrigued me a little was the ability to send addresses from the phone to the Garmin. If I was going out to visit a supplier, I could look up his contact and beam it to the Garmin. In theory - I haven't seen it work but I just started playing with it. So far - free is just about the highest price I would pay for this app.

Follow Up: Okay - I'm happy now. I didn't know about the audio mixer for navigation, bluetooth, & media levels.

Had the same problem at first. Seems you have to learn how to speak to it through trail and error. Then it responds quite well. Downloaded the full manual ~78 pages and am amazed at what it can do. Voice command is amazing! You practically never have to type anything in anymore.

I found out about an Audio Mixer and brought the bluetooth and navigation up to the same level by decreasing the Nav & increasing the master.

You are right - it is a great unit and the voice control for both the navigation and phone is super handy. The phone voice call person selection works better that my phone. I am very happy with the unit now. The 5" screen makes as bigger difference than I thought. I'd recommend it to anyone whose looking.

I am amazed at the traffic information. I had traffic avoidance on my old Garmin but this this unit takes it to a different level. On Christmas night I was driving home from Guelph on the 401. It had been snowing lightly and the roads were a little slippery. Somewhere quite a distance to the west of Milton, the GPS warned of an up coming traffic slow down. At ~ 2 kilometers, the GPS popped a little traffic icon that counted down the distance to the slowdown and it was bang on. What I found strange was that I was still in the boonies - how the information regarding the traffic congestion location make out on to the network and into my GPS ? In Toronto I could understand but in the middle of no where ?

Guess technology is moving faster than I can fathom. I'm turning into my grandfather.
