I really enjoy cooking with fresh ingredients at home.

Lately I have been cooking a lot of Italian dishes, and the garlic and onions are stinking up my hands, probably my breath, and not to mention my entire house.

Any ideas on how to get rid of the smell on my hands? In my house? I tried chopping them with thin plastic gloves, and it is really a pain. I turn the fan on on my stove and open windows, seems to help, and I use oil plug-ins in my house anyways.

Don't worry, I know how to brush, floss, rinse and chew gum.

To no avail, when you walk in my house, the garlic hits you like a punch in the face.

I also don't want to reek of garlic when I am on dates :p

I really don't want to give up cooking with garlic though....anyone have a secret to get rid of the smell?

Rub your hand with sliced limes. It will eliminate the oders. As for the house rather then mask them boil or saute some lime with a pinch of cinnimin and vanalia for a few minutes after cooking. The sent will clense the hosue and you might find it to be far better then any commercial air freshener.

BTW nothing wrong with the sents of food

Thanks a lot. I will try this next time I cook with garlic, (probably really soon :p) and post back with the results.

You will love the results.

BTW it is scents not sents.

And I hate to disagree but there is something wrong with the scent of certain foods on your wife/gf/sp/bf whatever if you haven't had it yourself...there is nothing worse than leaning in to kiss someone and getting hit in the face with a cloud of noxious vapours.

BTW I love onions and would love to eat a spanish onion like an apple, thing is I don't as I do have to deal with the public.

Any odor is fine as long it is fresh and not overbearing but after it become stale, and permeates your clothes, home, furniture etc. is more like pollution than cooking aroma. Tina: I don't know if you own your place or rent but the range hood should have a high cfm fan and should be externally vented not just filtered. With all these oils and air fresheners all they do is just cover up the smell and it will return. You should use something like fabreeze to eliminate the odor, not just mask it (dam, started to sound like a commercial there for a minute! :)

As for garlic on your breath, there are these drops you can get at the pharmacy that is supposed to neutralize gralic breath. Forget what they are called bust ask the pharmacist, he will know.

In a van down by the river
simple solution

Buy fresh chopped garlic in a jar. Look for a label without preservatives. Chances are that it is a natural product.Chopped garlic is usually in the produce section and is very good. try to use the one in water rather than in oil.

Onions are a bit more tricky. You can buy some IQF( individually Quick Frozen) diced onions, but you loose a bit of the flavor.

Have fun.

There are some benefits to cooking with garlic. Vampires will not enter your house.

rub your hands across the blade of a stainless steel knife
For all you ummm (dolts) out there, rub it across the FLAT side NOT the sharpened edge.........

I also heard that there is scientific evidence that Tina can remove the odors from her hands by rubbing them vertically along my member.........it does work, really it does! *eg*

Svend beat me to it... rub your wet hands on some stainless steel and presto, no more smelly hands. My kitchen sink is stainless steel and after washing dishes etc. I'll rub my hands around the sink while I'm cleaning it down and by the time I dry my hands, no more smell.

Add Parsley to your food.

Someone told me that Parsley gets rid of the garlic smell from your body. Something about the deodorizing properties of the cholrophil in Parsley. There is a lot of stuff about it on the web.

I usually buy large quantities of peeled garlic in an asian grocery store and chop it in my food processer all at once.
Put 1/2 cup in a zip lock bag and flatten it. Once frozen, it is easy to use and tastes much better than the chopped garlic that you buy in the grocery stores.

As for the Onion, try chopping the ends off, peeling the outer layer and store it in cold water in your fridge. When you chop the cooled onion, you will tear less and the onion smell won't stay on your hands as much.

Buy yourself a good knife. The most commercial being Zwilling by J.A. Henckels. These are the ones with the two dudes in the logo. A good sharp knife will make cleaner cuts to your onions and garlic. You will find that there is less juice being produced. It's the juice that makes your hands smell. Just remember to clean your knife with cold water and cloth only, dry immediately and store safely where it will not rub against anything. Food will not stick easily to a good knife and requires nothing more than a damp cloth to clean. No scrubbers detergents or dish washers!! Also sharpen your knives frequently.

As for the smell in your house, try using less oil in your food. The garlic and onion smell is carried by the oil that you use.

I personally don't mind the smell of garlic and onion.

We eat TONS of garlic at our house (ain't no vampires around here!).

I don't know if it comes out in our pores or not -- I occasionally notice the smell of garlic on someone who has just come from lunch, but otherwise not.

A friend of mine told me once that she and her husband noticed that when they used garlic powder, it affected the smell of their body odor -- but not when they used fresh garlic.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless someone mentiones it. I see mostly regular clients, and I eat a LOT of garlic. But then, I think a lot of my clients do too. Garlic might just be a fact of life!

(And they say it makes us horny. ;) )

My own personal opinion is that a woman who delights in food and delights in sport is probably going to delight in sex too. Is that you?

..c..

Tomato Juice

Rinse your hands (and or body) in tomato juice, also drink some tomato juice to freshen you breath.. Adding water to doesn't decrease its effectiviness..

You guys are wayyyy off. It is simple. Never eat alone!

Rubbing your hands on Stainless Steel is said to help, but really. Come on. Why make a sauce / gravy that takes at least two days to cook and eat it yourself?

Tina_Ballerina if needs be, come to Ottawa. At lest I can solve this problem with wine, pasta and song!

Garlic and Onions RULE!

Here's your solution Tina: Advise your customers that they too should load up on O & G. If you're both seasoned, neither party will smell the others'.

For me, garlic breath on a girl is a turn on.

For your hands, try mixing lime juice & baking soda with your handwash, and alos try that stainless steel soap bar from Sears & Kitchen Stuff - it works for fish.
