Well going back to the tube to watch Josephs debut!;)

Woo Hoo

Go Leafs Go!!!

Damn, I should have picked Belfour as my Goalie in the hockey pool. Now if he can just save the first shot on net at Air Canada Centre then we are in the money!

Eddie had a great opener. I'm still holding back on being sold on him though. Let's hope the knees hold out, otherwise it will be a very long season. I miss Cujo. Hopefully, he'll be a distant memory by season's end. Afterall, who's the one with the Standley Cup ring??!!

P.S.-Here's good one....Why does everyone in Toronto drink their coffee out the saucer?
Answer: Because all the cups are in Montreal! (as told to me by a Hab fan-God I hate him)

Here we go again

You know why Belfour has a ring? Because he had some great defencemen infront of him. If you look at any of the Stanley Cup champs you'll see a great team from top to bottom. I am so very tired of hearing that Cujo couldn't do this or that... he was the best goddamn goaltender that the Leafs have had in over 40 years, including our present one. If Cujo had the same defensive corps that Belfour, Brodeur or Roy had, he would have had a couple of rings by now!
In the 4 years here, Cujo was our MVP for 3 of those 4 years. I'll miss him, but I'm a Leaf fan through and through. Great start guys! That's one down, only 81 to go. Don't go selling the farm yet people.

Good Point Happy Wanderer. Remember how well he did in the Olympics. Face it, Curtis is a good but not great goalie. Who do you favour in a Joseph vs Roy playoff battle? I know who I'm going with.

Defence

Have to agree with you HW!

Defence has always been a big factor in winning a Stanley Cup!I don't think Josepsh has ever had a distinguished core of defencemen infront of him! to my knowledge anyway, can't remember who played infront of him in his St.Louis day?

IMHO Belfour looked kind of slow and clumsy,he did make a few good saves last night but I don't think many where high scoring chances except for a couple in the last 4 mins of the game.

Sure it was a great start with a shutout but we will soon see if he can keep it up?

All in all I think the team played well!they where passing the puck nice and crisp, stayed in position and played an overall solid game.

Go Leafs Go!

Maybe the Leafs...

Should outfit all their defencemen with those big 'Craig Ludwig' shin pads to make Eddy feel at home!

He really showed he was one of the best at the Olympics. Detroit wont make it out of the Western Conference with Joseph, Roy vs Joseph equates to an Avs win, Joseph vs Nabokov (hopefully he'll sign soon) is a toss up. When the chips are down Joseph has repeatedly failed the test, 02 olympics, 2000 game 6 and 7 flop against the Devils, 93 (when he was with the Blues) and lost 6-0 against the Leafs in game 7. If Curtis manages to get the Wings out of the Western Conf i'll give mim credit. Until the he'll remain a good but not great goalie.

I thought Eddie looked pretty good overall. In the preseason games he looked weak and generally not comfortable in the net. Yesterday's game was a different Ed Belfour; yesterday we saw the goalie the Leafs really want & need.

Maybe he plays better on the road than at home. I hope not - we need consistency after all. But on the whole, Belfour's performance yesterday was pretty good.

For that matter, the whole team seemed to play well. Perhaps Pittsburgh was off their game, but the Leafs looked solid. Let's hope this continues for at least a few more games!

Torex - you're damn right that defence has always been a major factor in winning a Stanley cup: no team has won a cup with a lousy defence.

Rusty - I agree Joseph has faults - but let's not get all over him for losing the games that mattered.

The Canadian team at the Olympics was a disorganized mess in Game 1 against a much better-prepared Sweden.

In Game 7, 2001 against NJ - the Leafs self-destructed. When Jersey's top line of Arnott-Elias-Sykora finally began producing, the Leafs simply couldn't match their offence. With a porous Toronto defence, Joseph had no chance on a lot of those goals.

In Game 6, 2000, the Leafs again were no match for Jersey's potent offence. Recall that the Leafs had less than a dozen shots on net in that game? You have to score goals to give the goalie a chance to win.

Rember the firewagon hockey of the Oilers in the 80's? They said that as long as you could pop in 6 or 7 goals of your own, it didn't matter if you allowed 4 or 5.

I'm not one to criticize the Leafs, but I will say that they do create excellent scoring chances - at both ends of the ice.
