Future Shop Warranty

While my Toshiba laptop was under the Toshiba warranty I had no problems having it repaired. Unfortunately, this expired in May and the $447 (plus taxes) Future Shop extended warranty I had purchased kicked in. Six weeks ago, I experienced problems with both the original adapter and with the piece to which it is to be placed in the computer and off it went to the shop. I just received a call from Future Shop in Kingston, Ont. informing me that I had caused the problem through misuse (something I dispute) and that I will have to pay over $350 for repairs. Though I expressed my dismay at this, I reluctantly agreed to pay the amount. Now, I'm wondering if anyone else here has faced a similar situation. When I finally pick up my Toshiba (who knows when), I will undoubtedly not be doing so in a cheerful manner. If, indeed, I'm forced to hand over the complete $350+, I vow to never shop there again, this after having spent thousands of dollars at Future Shop for various products. {BTW, after a month's wait for my laptop to be repaired without an adequate response, I purchased a Dell Inspiron 9300 since I find it difficult to be without a computer for such a length of time and in the acknowledgement that my family could use a second one.}

I believe Future Shop was the subject of an expose on one of the Canadian News shows a couple of years ago. Basically, all the promises they make about extended warrranty seem to be fraudulent. They promise the moon and then when it comes down to honouring the warranty, they say you broke the item and it isn't covered. Or, they claim that the employee who sold you the warranty "mistakenly" misexplained the conditions.

I bet for every 10 people you find with experiences like yours you'll find 3 who have had things work out for them.

Buying things for the cheapest retail price doesn't always end up with you saving money in the long run.

I buy all my/my company's computer equipment from a reputable private dealer. Have for over 5 years. Don't plan on changing.

Never buy an extended warranty from Future Shop!

Shortly before the extended 'warranty' expired, I took my Epson Stylus Color 740 printer in for a cleaning and asked them to look at a screeching noise that it made when it started up on power on. They took two weeks to tell me that I needed new print heads and that they would give me only $70.00 credit for a new, replacement printer, which was supposed to be exact functional of the older one. Yeah, right. The 'replacement' did not have serial port and Apple serial ports.

When I got the printer back home, the 'defective head' Epson, I immediately printed out a beautiful colour 8 by 10 photo of my kids. All that the printer needed was a proper cleaning and a rub of light oil on the rails that support the print heads.

Moral of the story; Keep your money. A reputable printer does not die easily. And, If the printer needs repair beyond the manufacturer warranty period, it will probably be outdated by that time.

Future Shop warrantee = extra profit for Future Shop.

The moral of the story the higher up the ladder of success you are the more you can cheat the other guys and get away with it. They just like to sell you extras that amount to nothing for your advantage. Gone is the day of great customer service unless you are buying from a new company that is just starting out and only has reputation to fall back on.

Not necessarily. The fact that so many people know about the future shop warranty con is proof that it leaves a sour taste with customers. They may be getting away with it in the short term, but in the long term they are shooting themselves in the foot.

Extended Warranties are to pad the bottom line...

... and nothing else.

While I never had the dishonour of working for Future Shop, I did work for a retailer who shall remain nameless that sold extended warranties.

I refused to sell them to clients because I believed, then as now, that they were essentially an insurance that the manufacturer would not be responsible in dealing with their product or their customers.

I've never bought, or sold, an extended warranty myself. In the rare occasions where an item failed a short time after the warranty period, I have never had problems dealing directly with the manufacturer. In both cases - an HP printer and a Canon camera - the manufacturer fixed the problems at no charge except for shipping.

The expose on the Future Shop extended warranty fiasco can be found here: http://www.cbc.ca/streetcents/archives/guide/2002/06/s05_01.html

Don't count on it. Future Shop's poor service record and their BS extended warranty has been known about for years. There are just a many though... if not more... who don't know. They have been getting away with this for years and will con't to. Just like the 'no models left in stock' scam. In fact I think they did get finned for that one... but still con't to do it anyway afterwards. They have an ad in the paper with some fantastic buy then when you get to the store... they say they are sold out of that model... and then upsell you.

I went to furture shop on 3 different occassions and bought some small stuff each time. Each time, they didn't have change. I mean "no-cash" in the tills at all. None of the tills. I had to pay by credit card or debit. I left and went to staples each time.

I went on another occassion to buy a computer {with someone else} They paid buy credit card, but the system was down so he had to wait about 30 minutes for theses guys to print a hand reciept.

I went on again another occassion for a printer cartage. I saw they had a HP 3820 on sale for about the cost on my old out dated printer cartage, so I bought the printer. The salesmen tried to tell me that they only work on USB's and that I would need a new cord since it didn't come with the HP printer. I told him no, he said didn't like that answer. My printer works with the old printer cable that I had.

I have since stopped going to furture shop.

I very much appreciate the response so far. I did learn soon after the fact that I should have bought an extended warranty from Toshiba and not from Future Shop, but, of course, it was too late. As I posted, I did have some problems with my laptop during the first year and Toshiba provided no cost repairs (without claiming that I was to blame). I have purchased an extended warranty from Dell for my new computer, at a price much lower than Future Shop charged for my warranty with them.

I bought a Palm T3 from them 2 years ago. The salesman reassured me if there was a problem the extended warrenty would kick in and replace my defective palm. I cannot send my unit in for repairs... I am too dependent on it. To make a long storey short they never did honor the arrangement and I never will deal with them again.

Nobody is disputing that the product is no good. Heck, you can buy an hp or compaq laptop anywhere. It's the service and warranty which is dubious at best.

Wow

All this negative shit about future shop surprises me. I've had my toshiba laptop for just over 3 yrs and bought it there along with the extended warranty. Had it repaired twice under original 1 yr and twice through future shops warranty. I had no problem with them at all. Maybe I was one of the lucky people.
