I can't believe how much rain we've had this year.
Seems like every day it's raining. Can't remember such a wet spring / summer.

It's not the rain so much as the humidity in the air (brought from the southerly winds picking up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico) that I hate -- today it feels like it's 40 degrees outside. I tend to prefer cooler, less humid summers, with temperatures in the low 20's and a nice breeze from the north.
The Great Lakes certainly contribute to the humidity in the GTA. However, since the GTA (specifically Toronto) sits on the north side of Lake Ontario, the winds coming from the south from the Gulf of Mexico, which is already humid to begin with, crosses through that body of water and picks up additional moisture, giving a vast humid airmass to essentially sit in this area. The intersection of the warm, moist airmass with a colder, drier airmass coming from Arctic is what causes occasionally severe thunderstorms. The humidity is not from the Gulf of Mexico, it is from the Great Lakes, primarily Lake Ontario in the GTA. It is the same reason why the GTA winters are milder than other parts of Canada at the same latitude, the moderating effect of the Great Lakes.
