They say 800 women die every day as a result of pregnancy-related complications - the leading cause of death for teenage girls in the developing world.

"When I travel and talk to women around the world they tell me that access to contraceptives can often be the difference between life and death," Gates said.

Gates, a Catholic herself, has been criticized by some Catholic groups in the United States over her backing for the initiative.

But delegates steered clear of discussing Vatican opposition to contraception until one asked British Prime Minister David Cameron how the sponsors of the campaign could influence the Catholic Church to change course.

"The answer lies in the force of our arguments," he said.

I think this is a wonderful gesture by Melinda Gates, and I think women in developing nations should have access to quality healthcare including contraception.

I however suspect that Melinda made this donation out of a genuine care for the health of young women in developing countries. Unlike the OP who clearly needs some anger management and has decided tolerance and understanding is only for people who agree with him. Perhaps it is arrested development he suffers from.

I'm sure that 'fuck you' wasn't quite what the Gates were saying to the church, as they've got more class than that, but just the idiot remark from a drama queen or someone who suffered some oxygen deprivation earlier in life. clearly since somehow he thinks RLD and I are the same person.

God will get him for that.

Curious how sex is natural, but pregnacy is 'dangerous'.....I'd bet that the leading cause of pregancy is intercourse.

Yes. And the leading cause of pregnancy is sex. So what? Why is it natural to have sex and not get pregnant, with contraception....but it's considered not natural to abstain from sex, and oddly enough...not get pregnant?
Yeah the RC church and even ditzy Sarah Palin have been pushing/preaching that abstinence crap for thousands of years!!!
How's that been working out for them???.....

In some cultures, if you get pregnant out of wedlock or not by your husband, they kill you.
I imagine there's not need to get pregnant in these cultures, having sex out of wedlock might be enough. Not that either are right mind you, but the availabilty of contraception is really NOT the point about saving the woman's life. The Church is not wrong here. If people are going to have sex out of wedlock, which is against church teaching, why do people assume that these sexual relations will not involve contraception, BECAUSE THE CHURCH SAYS SO. Sounds like Alice in Wonderland thinking.

I suppose it works out fine. Those who abstain, don't get pregnant and don't have pregnancy related complications.
Do you really think people will follow the church's teaching on birth control, but not on sexual behaviour? Why one but not the other???

Well >95% of RC women disagree with the church's teaching on birth control but that doesn't stop RC cementheaded bishops from still trying to impose their antiquated Taliban-like thinking!....:eyebrows:

If there is a God, I suspect he has much more important things to focus on.
And is well a ware that a 7¢ condom employed at the proper moment would have accomplished the same thing.

Melinda's remark that contraception is the best abortion prevention should be stamped on every piece of Right to Life propaganda. An old marketing slogan comes to mind "None valid without this mark."

That maybe true, but is not the point. If people followed church teaching there would be no children out of wedlock, minimal STDs and hopefully reduced numbers of pregnancy death. Just because people are willing to risk these thing for the feel good few moments of out of wedlock sex, does not mean the church is wrong, does it?

The POINT IS, the RC church lives in a fantasy world that DOES NOT exist in reality!
If their clerics weren't spending sooooo much time boning each other and their altar boys, maybe they would see this!.....;)

Don't waste your time with pekkerhead. Many of us have him on ignore as it a waste of energy having any discussion with him. Your blood pressure will thank you.

Really well actually. The ABC program, long before there was much C available made significant dents in the rate of HIV infections in a number of subsaharan African countries.

The ABC policy as noted above has saved at least hundreds of thousands of lives.

And in many countries where AIDs sufferers are stigmatized they are provided care by religious people, Catholic nuns in particular.

So while you may be focused on homosexuality, the RCC spends a great deal of time and resources alleviating the suffering of the afflicted.

I really should put you back on ignore where you belong.
