Buddy had 3 pcs that were going to print from one laser printer. One computer had the printer connected usb

The computers settings were to share everything with everybody and network discovery on.

One computer with xp and 2 with windows 7. At first the pc with xp had the printer connected on it, when the one with 7 (that you could clearly see in the network) was told to connect to the xp....it started working, downloaded the driver..installing the driver then "windows cannot connect to the printer- access is denied"

When I connect via usb the printer to the pc with seven , then go to the pc with xp I see the printer...connect..and no problem it installs and prints.

When I try to connect the 3rd pc (also win 7) to the pc with & I get the same...I see it on the network....installs the driver but I get the same message as above- access is denied. There are no passwords, all are admins, everything shared using a router.

Drives me nuts, any ideas?

When you install the driver on the "7", are you installing it from the network (or CD), or installing it from the Shared Host (XP), as a Shared Printer?

And during the installation, I presume you're saying it's a Network Shared Printer - what does it say when it goes looking for the printer at that stage of the driver installation?

Hmm, try mapping to the IP address of the computer with the printer.

For example, when adding the printer device on the computer, \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\printer instead of using computer name.

I'm assuming that your printer is not network capable right?
I tried that didn't work,
The printer has a network connection, I just don't know how to set it up...(maybe I should try that)

Says the printer is found..installing drivers....then windows cannot connect to the printer- access is denied

out of the blue, could it have something to do with user rights/permissions and a conflict between the diff os's. User rights permissions. If not disregard, I'm referring to xp and 7. I'm not that well versed but it could be the thing that is blocking

Maybe a stupid question but have you checked that the printer is win7 compatible?

2 of my 3 were not although I do not remember what the symptom of incompatibility was.

always think outside of the box, sometimes it's something very simple and mostly hardware incompatibility

The Windows 7 PC needs to have the driver for that version of Windows. The message "Windows is downloading drivers" means it's downloading the drivers that are available on the PC the printer is physically connected to. So your Windows 7 PC is downloading the Windows XP driver, which won't work. You should download the proper driver from the manufacturer's web-site.

You may want to get a network-enabled printer. It is a lot more convenient to connect your printer directly to the network either with an Ethernet cable or wifi so you don't have to leave a computer on.

If Printer is connected by USB to a PC, you will have to Share that Printer on the PC for other computers to see it.
