Some of you know that I create computer fonts as one of my hobbies. My latest project is AmyBats, a series of dingbat, (picture) fonts featuring Amy Winehouse. Four have been completed so far. Each has a twenty-six character set, for the lower case alphabet. You can get them here, along with my other fonts:

http://cg.scs.carleton.ca/~luc/bobistheowl.html

You should not try to use any of my fonts if you are using Windows Vista, with Clearface enabled. They also open slowly and use a lot of memory in preview, but they work fine if they're installed in the Fonts folder, then used in an MS Word document.

Of course I am shilling my own work, but if you are not a fan of Amy, you're probably not reading this anyway, and if you are a fan, you will appreciate these.

Below is an extra wide picture that will be used in one of the fonts I haven't completed yet. Please comment if you like these.

Thanks,

~bito

This picture is from AmyBats3. It's 82% of the actual size of the 72 point glyph size in the font itself. For some reason, the thumb graphic for AmyBats4 overlaps most of the picture on my downloads page. That will be fixed in the next day or so.

What do you do with Amy Winehouse fonts? They are not letters, so you can't write with them? They are just used for inserting small pictures of Amy Winehouse into your document?

The lower case alphabet a-z creates the picture glyphs shown in the character guides. Yes, you can put them in any document, or save them as
artistic curiosities. Fans of Amy would probably want to have something like that, hence the name of this thread.

I use graphics almost three times larger than for most fonts, so I'm able to create much more complex drawings than can be done with regular one inch high font glyphs at 72 point size.

At some point, I will be doing a font series of classic 1940's era pinup girls. I probably can't do too many Alberto Varga pictures, because he used pastels mostly, and that doesn't translate well from full colour to monochrome.

Perhaps, if there are any SPs reading, who would like to give people an idea of what they look like, but don't want to put a photo of their face up on their site, I can convert a colour picture to a font glyph that can be a flattering likeness, but wouldn't give their identy away if someone saw them in public. I might then use that picture in a font of diverse faces, without identifying who those people are.

Proper lighting in the picture and a photo that's not straight on usually work fine, so semi profile is best. In straight on photos. the nose tends to disappear when I convert to a black and white pixel bitmap. I make all the pictures with MS Paint. It's low tech, but I get good results.

Except for hearing that she is drugged up... I have never heard of her - maybe I'm too old for her music but I don't think I ever heard anything by her.

Her music is a hybrid of jazz, soul, blues, ska, and other types, influenced by these, rather than lifted from them, to create a sound that is familiar, but unique.

Sometimes she sounds like Aretha Franklin, or Al Green. or Billie Holiday, without being an imitator. Her type of music is appealing to an older audience, if they are sufficiently open minded to ignore the tabloid trash coverage. She's like the female Kurt Cobain of this music era in terms of self destruction, but their music styles are polar opposites.

I didn't know much about her music either, until recently, but I consider her to be the most important female vocalist since Janis Joplin.

Here's an example of what I can do with a picture of Shannon Hudson. If she objects, the mods can take it down, but it has artistic merit, and is not unflattering

Here's one of Morgan Van Lief. I would have to get rid of the line acress the top, but not a lot of other changes would need to be made.

Amy will not be at the Grammy Awards. The USA will not allow her entry:cool:

According to an ad for the Grammy Awards on CBS today, during the Boston College - Duke men's basketball game, "Amy Winehouse will perform live Sunday"

She doesn't have to enter the US to do that. They can have a satellite feed from England, and the information in the ad would still be correct, but a little bit misleading. Then again, maybe they have relented, and will let her in the US. We'll know tomorrow.

Dani, here's how you might look in a font glyph. We have met before, and my certificate is in the name bobistheowl. Keep in mind that This was done from a small original in .jpg format, and I didn't do any editing, but it gives you an idea of how this sort of thing could be interesting.

I listened to Amy sing and don't see the big deal about her. I think she has an average voice but that's just my taste in music.
