I gather 'commercially viable' means a flying car is going to be cheaper
than a non-flying Tesla.

"Breakthrough" battery technology claims are the call of the new Dream Merchants looking to fleece investors.

Flying Car Dream Merchants were about three scams ago. Paul Moeller pulled this scam for 50 years! And still not one of his ever did more than hover, tethered to the ground. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moller_M400_Skycar

There is a "flying car" already. It is called a HELICOPTER.

The most modern helicopter is still incredibly difficult to learn to fly. Even a lightweight 2 seat helo with high efficiency piston engines and a lightweight airframe and long rotor blades, like the Robinson R22 is far less efficient than a fixed wing aircraft.

Unless and until some very primary, foundational laws of physics and aerodynamics are reinvented, and breakthroughs in materials science that are not even on the horizon are made, "flying cars" are nothing more than aspirational dreams that will deplete everyone involved of their money.

I find the prospect a little terrifying myself. Pilots are trained and tested, the planes they fly (including the smallest prop) are routinely serviced - all traffic is controlled by air traffic controllers. imagine taking your passenger vehicle drivers en mass during the rush hour, elevating them from a 2-D road surface with traffic signals and signs to a 3-D space void of restraints.

I'll be looking for economical tunneling vehicles to avoid the falling debris from above.

Choppers are hard to fly because they were invented and designed in the analogue age. And while there have been technological leaps and bounds, the basic function and utility is still that of the old design and also limited by it. The "flying car" will be a scaled up version of what we now know as drones. Fully automated and not requiring inputs from the passenger(now known as the pilot) beyond clicking on a spot on the map. However, while the air frame technology is now available, the machines are still not ready for prime time due to the software limitations and the lack of power source that would allow flights beyond 10-15 minutes mark. The software limitations are the real big problem and that can be seen currently in the new generation of semi autonomous passenger cars that can perform extremely well in a light highway traffic on a fine day, but become all but useless in heavier traffic and/or adverse weather conditions.
