IMO, this deals a heavy blow to the other contenders for the conference crown. Not only did they get Burke, but Radivojevic, who should replace a bunch of the points they lose in Comrie. Heck, he wasn't performing that well in Philly - Branko should more than make up for the loss.

This should put pressure on the rest to improve, or further risk an early exit.

What is Gretz doing?

This is a great trade for Philly. They get the goalie they need, Radivojevic has already proven he can play in the NHL & he will only get better. Ben Eagar is a power forward for Oshawa who is good when he wants to be but lacks consistant desire...but then they used to say the same thing about Todd Bertuzzi! Comerie is a good player but not worth what the 'yotes gave up.

Most have said that Toronto needs a solid say at home defenceman. Too bad that they lose out on Weinrich, but I can see Philly not wanting to trade within the conference.

O'Niel and Boughner from Carolina makes some sense and they are certainly on the trade block. Let's see who picks them up.

The Weinrich deal makes for interesting prospects. If St. Louis can't recover from their injuries then he becomes expendable within the month. He would look great in Blue and White.

Clarke is a moron, and as long as he is runnig Philly you can be sure they will go nowhere.

I don't think another forward is what we need, we need 1 or 2 defencemen to help poor Eddie out.

If we can get Gonchar AND Boughner, i'd feel a lot more confident heading into the playoffs.

Yup - both guys would be sweet. McCabe, Kaberle, Klee, Boughner, Gonchar, plus Berg / Pilar / Marchment / Belak. I'd like to be able to lump all those guys together in the six spot and not have to depend on them too much in the playoffs. ;)

I wouldn't have given up Radivojevic either. Unless he thinks higher of Comrie than I do, AND is certain of being able to lock him up. Burke was gone soon anyway, but not Branko. .... I dunno ....

Re: Clarke blows it again

Clarke already had Burke and Burke blew it in Philly. He is an older goalie that, except for the great run his rookie year, has been poor in the playoffs. His stats this season are also a lot worse than his (ex)partner Boucher. While he is a better backup than a rookie, I'm not sure that Burke is a big improvement over Esche.

Radivojevic is a nice third liner but nothing special.

Eager is the next Brad May. Big and fast with hands of stone. The 2002 draft is generally considered to be a crap year so his first round status means little. It's always nice to have big and fast guys but Eager projects to be a 4th liner, perhaps a 3rd liner.

Clarke gave up Comrie, a 23 year old that has already scored 30 goals. Perhaps Clarke gave up on him after a slow start. A mistake, IMHO.

Phoenix wins because they get the best player. They get one of the better young offensive players in the game for spare parts (average goalie, 3rd liner, ok prospect). The only problem I can see for the Coyotes is that they have to sign Comrie this summer.

Clarke traded a stud defence prospect in Woywitka, a first round pick and a third round pick for Comrie. With those assets he should have got a real goalie.
The three years prior to this one, Burke was one of the ten best goalies in the league. I'd argue that over that stretch, he was one of the best five. Has age become a factor this season? Perhaps.
The thing about playoff goaltending is that teams always want someone proven - if Clarke loses with Burke, it doesn't look as bad as it would if he lost with Esche. He's right. Burke is a *proven* goaltender. Esche still has lots to prove, although I agree in general, that Robert's probably, at this point, on a par skill-wise with Burke, and is in the process of passing him. But, Burke doesn't need to hold it together for long. Just one playoff run. He's almost certainly got it in him.

Radivojevic projects as a second-liner at least. He's only 23.

Comrie was underachieving in Philadelphia. Now, he's only 23 as well, and has already put up great numbers. Did the holdout hurt his stock around the league? Probably. He also needs to be signed.

I think we may have to wait and see who wins this trade.

Philly is going to need a goalie of Burkie's stature becuase through all this they seem to have lost their defense. WTF is Clarke thinking with the Weinrich deal? He already had two starting D on the sidelines, trades away Weinrich and Woywitka in the Comrie deal and he thinks Danny Markov is going to ppick up the slack...I don't think so.

I'm not sure what the Weinrich deal was about, frankly. If he ends up in T.O. somehow, Clarke shouldn't be happy.

I can't see the Blues giving up Weinrich to the Leafs, even if they did want him. The magic is gone is St. Luois and they need defensemen real bad...they could do with some offense as well. Without MacInnis and jackman, Pronger can't hold the fort himself. Teams are already exploiting the fact that he's overworked. He may be in great shape, but he can't do it all.

No, frankly, I can't see it either. However, I do think St. Louis is a very marginal western playoff team this year.

I think Weinrich was a classic salary dump. Clarke might have needed some room on salary and Weinrich was making 3 million a season.

I'm not sure what made Clarke think his D was so deep as to be able to start dumping salary, but whatever. Suits me fine. ;)

Wouldn't an awesome counter be Toronto picking up Lang and Gonchar for Antropov, Carlo Colaiacovo and Ric jackman?

Kathleen,

Why all the hate on for Antropov? If he's making millions & under-achieving I can understand, but lets give this guy some more time. I hate to see him blossom in another uniform.

I guess Clark doesn't have the budget he likes to say he has, because after you retire hacket and dump Weinrich, he comes out a little ahead when you look at the three players (2 contracts) he traded for.
