It depends where you are travelling in Canada.

If you are travelling from downtown and do not want to leave your car at the park n' fly of take an airport limo, then travel with Porter.

They also have complimentary shuttle from Union Station.

Since I live in downtown Toronto, I find this service helps me greatly without going to Pearson.

I have to vote for the Air Canada website. You have to check the fares all the time, though, because they change each day, and sometimes three or four times each day. Usually, Mondays seem a bad day for bargains, and Wednesday and Sunday nights seem good. Also, because they have a feature showing how many seats are "available" on a flight, you sometimes get an idea which ones will come up for sale in a day or two.

As well, there is a different sale on from day to day, and sometimes the make no sense at all. I bought a flight on AC from Winnipeg to Calgary for $9 this month (of course, it ended up being much more with the taxes and fuel surcharges) because Westjet had the same special. Westjet had all their $9 tickets sold out, but AC had three flights a day in each direction that were still selling for $9 when I bought mine.

The other strange thing is that different departure cities have radically different fares, sometimes. I was looking at Vegas last week, and it was $169 from Ottawa, same thing from Toronto, but $59 from Winnipeg, with the flight through Toronto. Now, I don't know if you could buy that, and just get on in Toronto, but it serves to show the vagaries of the system.

All that being said, you end up putting in a few minutes to a half an hour each day looking for the cheapest fare, which often leaves early in the morning or late at night. You may save $100 to $200, because we're only talking domestic travel, here. It is worth it for me, because I is po', and I find it interesting. For someone with less time on their hands, you just can't save enough this way, because the ticket will only cost maybe $200, with much more being the taxes and charges which are never discounted.

It also depends on which day of the week and how long you are planning on staying.

As Sam said Wednesday and Sundays are usually quite good and Saturdays are good as well. If you book For Monday and out Friday, then you will usually pay a higher fare because that is when most business travellers fly.

Just looking tonight, you can get a flight to Quebec city towards the end of October for $69 each way, before taxes, if you pick the proper days. You can leave on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and come back on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The total price if you have a $69 flight each way is around $240. I can't see it getting much cheaper than that. There is $40 simply in airport departure fees.

You can reduce this rate further by $5 each way if you agree not to change your flights, which you may as well do, because the change fee would eat up most of the $69 anyway. You can also save another few bucks if you don't want the frequent flier miles and don't check a bag.

This is basically what the train costs, anyway. For an extra $120, you could fly any day of the week, if you took the cheapest flight of the day. Just remember to save $5 for a beer.

ok took the advice on Air Canada and found the 69 and 129 for a weekend getaway, throw in taxes and surcharges and its still about 20 dollars more than what the train would would have been, although compare a 90 minute flight to a possible 9 hour train ride, its a no brainer.
