Greetings!

Bought the SO a used 5 speed from CL. (no it's not stolen from the downtown Toronto guy, legit purchase).

Anyway, the bike came with a flat front tire that I thought I could replace easily enough. Now I'm finding I can't even get the tube out of the tire on the bloody rim! It appears as though the tube and the tire are one! Is this a new kind of tire?

How do you take a tire off of a bike rim?

I do a lot of biking and have never heard of such a thing. Why can't you get the tube out of the tire? If you can't get it out, take it to a bike shop and ask them to change it. It's a service charge of something like $10.

There appears to be an adhesive between the tube and the tire.

It's not an adhesive .. if the rubber is old it will get gummy and stick. Hot soapy water and pull .... hmmm my mind is now elsewhere ... time for a tug

Yes, I think this is both the problem and the solution. Or take it to a bike shop.

Sounds like you have a bike with tubeless tires.
(Yes, there are such things. Last seen on competitive racing bikes)
Tire is glued to rim.
Best take it to a bike shop.
Yes... sounds like tubulars. Usually there is a gap and you can rip it off (and clean it etc). Clinchers (standard variety) have profile where the tire bead can slip in.

The big issue is, you need to put tubulars back on and they can be *expensive*. I would be surprised by this on a Canadian tire bike. Sometimes tires are so old the tube and tire fuse... hopefully this is the case here.

The tire you have is a tubular meant for racing. You need to take it off the rim, unstitch it and fix the flat. Then, you have to sew it carefully up and glue it back to the rim. I had ridden tubulars for a very long time when I used to ride my Itaian racing bikes, like my Cinelli, Gios and my old Legnano. You can still get tubulars, as they still use them in the Giro and the Tour et al. I just glued tubulars to one of my old sets of wheels, lately.

Tubulars can cost you upwards of a hundred dollars for the really good ones, I believe. You need to go to a specialty bike shop for these.
