The reason that sickle cell anemia is so common among people of certain ethnicities is that inheriting one copy of the gene from a parent also conveys resistance to malaria. The same correlation applies to one copy of the cystic fibrosis gene and cholera, (this from a one-shot magazine published by Scientific American). As with all recessive genes, a copy of the gene must be inherited from both parents for the gene to be manifest.
