The Canadian government finally grew a set and put in the 1st purchase for new fighter jets.
I don't know why but someone got pissy and deleted my original post. So thought I would repost here.

What stupidity.
Yeah, exactly.

What the hell for?

They are going to buy 16 in total. The Trudeau government wants 16 of those F-35 fighters.

Has anyone in the Trudeau government ever looked on a map?

What or who are those F-35 going to defend Canada from?

The Mexicans!

Could be, but here is where the stupidity of the government shines through, on military matters. The F-35 don't have the range to fly that far to the Mexican border, to do whatever it has to do. It would need tankers. Not sure how many of those Canada got.

Well, if the F-35 is not to defend Canadian territory, then maybe it is used for expeditionary military operations.

Look, in this world, there are only two places that Canada would need this type of equipment to go fight them. That would be China and Russia. No one else has such advanced fighters or anti-aircraft defenses.

Those S-400 has anti-stealth capability. That has yet to be proven on the battlefield.

That is what all armchair generals want to see. We want to see the Americans fly their stealth aircraft into battle in Ukraine, and see if those S-400 work as advertised.

If it works, then Russia would sell so much of that S-400 systems to everybody, and still kept their S-500 which is supposed to be even better, all for themselves.

As for China, they are reported to have similar anti-stealth capabilities of their own. Russia and China are probably the two countries with the most heaviest layers of anti-air defenses. Also, China has about 200-300 5th generation stealth aircraft of their own. And Canada bought 16 of them to go fight Russia and China?

There is stupidity, and there is something so off the charts, it is hard to describe.

What is Canada going to do with these F-35?

The only realistic target is Serbia, that Canada is going to bomb Serbia again. However, Serbia is improving their defenses. The way the world is going, the Chinese will show up with free arms for the Serbs if things deteriorate.

Canada does not need F-35 to go bomb the Middle East or some African country. Those places cannot stop anything from bombing them.

This decision to buy F-35 for Canada is simply bizarre.

Hasn't anyone in the Canadian government been following the war in Ukraine?

Drones are doing amazing stuff on the battlefield.

From reconnaissance, to taking out armour, and killing grunts, the performance of the cheap drone has been exceptional in modern warfare.

The only justification is to fulfill NATO participation.
Otherwise buying drones seems much smarter, if we were worried about actually being attacked by anyone.

The only purpose is to show subservience to USA. Same as when we cancelled the avro arrow.

Nobody is thinking about invading Canada. The only possible invader would be USA over water rights.

TrueDooh or his advisors have probably seen a globe, apparently you haven't.

That being said, what we really need is a very long range plane capable of shooting down lumbering bombers and even then, with stand off cruse missiles that probably isn't much useful anymore.
With the size of the Chair Force fighters, we need them all to guard the northern flank of NORAD

Do you even know what a F-35 is?

Really! Do you know?

It is a air superiority fighter, capable of ground attack too.

What exactly is Canada going to do with that?

The Trudeau government will not tell the Canadian people who they intend to go into combat to kill with that. Why don't you tell us.

They saw a globe and decided to buy 16 of F-35?

16, that is 16 we are talking about.

What kind of logic is this to spend money?

I think I remember the UAE intended to buy something like 27 or 36 of those F-35 before that deal fell through.

16, that number ROTFLMAO kind of 16.

Fine. If we think 16 Canadian F-35 will alter the balance of power somewhere.

That is a good point.

It is also very problematic.

To make a long story short, we have to watch this war very closely.

It's outcome could be very detrimental to NATO.

We have NATO members like Germany, Italy, Spain, all hoping for better relations with Russia, after this war blows over.

Then there are other NATO members who are extreme Russophobes.

Jebus H Lemmy.

The point is, if you look at a globe vs a flat map which apparently you have never done in your life, you would see the real threat isn't Mexico FFS.
Also 16 can represent a start. It isn't as if they will buy 16 and scrap the rest of the current fleet.
Never mind the desirablilty of over seas deployments. You know, using overseas bases [which I kinda disagree with as we have a large border to watch over but meh] for which 16 is a fine number.
You go on and on, but you really haven't a clue about what what you are not talking about.

I should enjoy it when someone ROTHLMAO because they don't have a clue what they are talking about, but really I find that level of derpitude annoying.

This war will strengthen NATO, Russia will be done as a power. More EU countries are moving to renewables rather than risk giving that power back to Russia.
Canada will want American jets to take part in US exercises but hopefully not wars, otherwise buying Swedish flat pack jets would be smarter.
Drones for defence though do we really have to worry about being attacked or invaded by anyone?

I know for a fact this is a F35.
We can't rely on other nations to cover our ass. We need the ability to protect our air space. Russia has tested our air space multiple times.Don't believe me look it up. Canada and the US has scrambled fighters to discourage this but they keep testing us. Our 30+ year old CF18's need constant upgrading. Throwing good money after bad. Time to upgrade.
You ask who are we going to attack? Canadians aren't war mongers like Russia and NK. We do have an obligation under NATO to help other NATO countries in the event they need our help.
And for those who feel $7 billion for 16 jets is over priced, go back and read the article.
This is just the first purchase for jets. Other orders will be filled in future years.
People need to wake up and realize what kind of fucked up world we live in. China will attack Taiwan. It's just a matter of time.

The possibility of an attack is minimal for now but Canada's vast airspace up north has minimal patrol but as the tension grows in Ukraine...it's best to have something to protect that airspace...

I thought there would be other threads about this topic given today's news: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-f35-fighter-jet-deal-1.6707769

Not sure if you guys remember, but Boeing (makers of the F-18 Super Hornet) fucked over Bombardier when it brought the C-Series to market. They complained to the FTC and effectively made it impossible for Bombardier to sell the jet in the US. Airbus ended up buying the C-series and renamed it the A220. This deal is basically a big fuck you to Boeing.
