Its all about managing control and expectations. The US Democrats had a choice to make. Allow Hubert Humphry to run at the top of the Democratic ticket ( and face certain defeat) or allow him to run and or appease the masses of the party. One party official was once quoted if you have to chose between losing the election or control of the party, then lose the election.
That's EXACTLY whats going on here. Its hard enough trying to build an econmic engine with an intelligent and sober workforce as its is. Now if everyone can get stoned and come to work like a bunch of uninspired zombies, we will be lost and the corporations that pump money into the party coffers don't want an unproductive stoned workforce.

Well they didn't elect Sheila Copps as party president, so that's a good sign of moving forward. Hopefully, Rae will stick by his word when he accepted interim leader and not put his hat in the ring. I worry that with Rae as leader, the liberals won't stand a chance in the next election.

While I support the legalization of pot, I'm not too sure why it was such a hot item at this convention. With issues like the economy, military missions/spending, health care, etc. In the forefront, I'm not sure why the libs are even discussing pot and the monarchy. It really shows that they have a long way to go to reconnect with the voter.

One of these things is not like the other. Libertarians do care about social justice and people, however they would define social justice in a polar opposite manner from the way you are using it. I am of course using the term social justice as combining the meaning of the two words and not the wide spread use of the phrase which your typical libertarian would actually consider social injustice.

If this stuff is ever legalized, what will people's reactions to the horrible smell from marijuana be? Not everyone loves it.
A one time there were some pot smokers in my building. It smelled like someone had left a dead skunk in the hallway or emptied a can of cheap flowery air freshener.
I can smell that stuff a block away when I'm walking outside. Imagine if use becomes widespread.

There's also second hand smoke.

Most people have trouble with cigarette smoke. This is as bad if not worse.

Cigarette smoke has almost been totally legislated away from the public nose. Been years since I've smelled it. I doubt things would be much different for weed. I doubt it would be legal to toke up in work places and many other public places.

And in the very same breath, the Liberals do what Liberals do best, announce that it will be regulated and taxed.

IMO, the real corrosive effect on marijuana on society is the criminal economy it supports. It grows like, well like a weed! Unlike alcohol and cigarettes it is so easy to produce at low cost and has huge margins for every level of crime.

Taxing it will continue to make it economically attractive and viable to the blackmarket criminal element.

Agree wrt criminal activity. However the negative effects you are talking about will depend on the level of taxation. One sees the level of cigarette smuggling vary greatly based on the tax level on cigs.

The Canadian spelling is 'marijuana'. Download the Canadian English dictionary for Firefox here. I'm sure if one looks, it would be easy to find similar for other browsers.

Of course cannabis should be as legal as alcohol and tobacco. There are no credible arguments on the other side, although the overly-credulous keep repeating the discredited ones like mantras.

It should be treated like alcohol...alcohol is a far more dangerous drug than pot but it is a recreational thing, not to be mixed with work or driving or school.
