Just wondering what everyone's favorite credit card is. Currently I'm using the Platinum Avion card and Aerogold, even though I admit it's a bit redundant. I may get rid of one of them soon. With Avion, you have the option of redeeming points for merchandise, but your points expire if you cancel the card.

The Aerogold card is for air travel exclusively, but at least you get to keep your points no matter what. I'm also consdering using my platinum dividend card so I can get cash back, and also because that one has no annual fee.

MBNA

I had a MBNA Platinum card up until last July. After two months of having the credit card I received two calls a month by telemarketers for Minimum Payment insurance and upgrades to my card. I declined and after the third month of these phone calls I called MBNA and let them know I was not interested in getting new services from them. They apologized and promised not to call me again. It stopped for another month but then picked up again. That was the last straw! I called them and told them to cancel my credit card and let them know why. They were very apologetic and promised they would look into it to make sure it wouldn't happen again.

It did. So I cancelled the card once and for all.

The key to stopping unwanted calls is to tell them to put you on their not-call list. I've done this with several credit card companies and it stops the caller dead in his/her tracks. They tell you ok and that it may take a couple weeks to get put into the system, but then you won't receive their calls anymore.

I've done this with several cc companies and haven't gotten a call since. It probably works better with the larger, more reputable companies.

That's interesting. In all my dealings with Visa regarding account disputes, they have been very accomodating. There was even a very minor incident recently, where Visa charged me a service charge of $2.00 for a cash advance; even though it was actually MY money in the first place due to an overpayment on my behalf.

I told them I didn't like it and would they please reverse the charge. They did.

Canadian Tire Mastercard all the way, baby!

President's Choice Financial Mastercard. It's more than just free groceries. You can redeem home depot, chapters gift certificates, merchandise at Loblaws or directly at PC points website and travel packages at Thomas Cook.

Plus, if you have petro-points card, you can switch the points on equal value between PC points and petro-points. You can also switch the Sears points and PC points via the petro-points.

The only downside will be Mastercard is less "accepted" than Visa but still better than Amex. Another will be the card is no fee card and that means you don't have the perks that are standard on Platinum and Gold credit cards.

CIBC has a dividend (or dividend platinum) card which I use that give you back a percentage (1-2%) of your purchases at the end of the year... always nice to get $800-1000 back, especially around Christmas time.

RB Platinum Visa. I too find them very accomodating whenever I was a day or two late. I have never been charged any interest. They have cancelled my card a few times when I used it "outside the pattern" but I consider that to be a positive.

Hmmm...another one. There's a due date, you miss the due date and you complain of the consequences. Further, you withdraw business because they refuse to reverse interest to which 1) they told you they would do in advance 2)you agreed to that rule because you used the card 3)they provide ample warning with every statement and it's widespread knowledge 4)they're entitled because they LOANED you the money hence the term 'credit' in credit card. OK makes sense.

As for my fav, I like my Aerogold Visa most when in Canada. I like my American Airlines Platinum MasterCard when in the US and I use my CitiBank Platinum most overseas. For the internet (and at some Chinese restaurants and most emerging countries - I won't hear the end of racism now) I use a plain jane Visa with a $1000CAD limit - just in case.

Wow, am I going to get in trouble for this but...... assuming you're just young......

Lie. Lie BIG. Many years ago in college we took a class poll, then expanded it to the entire college. Result, 100% kids (some mature students) who told the truth (students, low income, temp work) and had even been sent "pre-approved" applications = denied; 100% kids who lied = accepted. Approximate 80 kids polled, poll accurate 100%, 20 times out of 20. A classmate was denied (student, farmboy), reapplied next month with same name and address but fake job and $80k salary and yes, you guessed it, got a cc in the mail 3 weeks later.

But don't tell anyone you heard it here, or from me.

Now to mitigate my cavalier advice, maybe cc companies reward perseverance, and honestly, the dude was a nice guy who just wanted a cc for all the normal reasons.

It will work but dont over due it............if your 19, 20 more than likely your not working somewhere fulltime for the past 4 years makeing 35-40k.

Your problem is you have no credit now and your i student from what you say......so it is gonna be hard the best thing for you to do is get a SECURED credit card walk into your bank the will explain it to you.

One word of advice STOP GOING AROUND AND APPLYING..........take this from someone who deals with peoples credit every day.

as a merchant, I encourage my customers not to use AMEX

business would rather people use MC or Visa as it costs them much more money when people pay with AMEX

freakshow is correct. If you're fresh out of college and you're having trouble getting credit, a secured card is the way to go for now.
