Due to unforseen circumstances we can actually rent the room you booked a year ago for $100 per night for up to $1,000 to watch the eclipse so you're outta luck your and reservation is cancelled.

This is actually progress of sort. Usually they wait for you to show up and say Oh, we're terribly sorry, but we show no reservation in your name - and we are currently full. 😟 Usually happens when you use a rewards program at a lower rate. The bumping for higher rate guests is even computerized in some instances. Oh. BTW long range weather predicts 80% cloud cover day of (Buffalo)...

They can do this because - what are you going to do? It is not like the airline industry where they have compensation rules.

I had great hotel experiences for the most part while I toured for a few years. Thankfully I never had my room cancelled.

I have been given some shitty rooms when using my rewards but I complain hard enough and I get changed to a different room.

Some hotels I always get a free upgrade so it is hit and miss depending on the chain and location.

Actually, I do know this hotel, they are quite reputable.

The problem is the Federal Gov't leased all of "Tower B" (which were the cheaper rooms) for incoming refugees. This was only supposed to be a short term solution.
They took approximately 30 - 35% of all rooms in Niagara, and were supposed to only take them until End of Feb or Mar. depending on the hotel/motel They came along and extended the leases at the last minute, leaving the propritors in the lurch. Not a good situation.

Don't believe me? Next time you are at Fallsview Casino, look on the diagonally opposite corner to the Wyndham Hotel Tower "B"..... how many hotels have bicycles hanging off the balconies, and belongings stored on them.

I read yesterday the Feds have spent $115 million, and still counting, so far on hotel rooms in the Falls.

So it is the government screwing everyone over. The hotel and the people who already had reservations.

Have people lost their minds? They can do what they want with their time and money, but why drive to Niagara and get a room specifically for an eclipse that lasts a few minutes? I know that people are exctied because there hasn't been a total eclipse seen from Canada in decades. On the other hand, the family could have driven to Long Point, which is also in the path of totality and clsoer London They could have driven to either place for the afternoon and been back in London for dinner.

Same thing with the schools boards that cancelled classes for the eclipse. I think there was a partial eclipse in the 90's while I was in high school. I remember walking home in darkness during that time. The teachers asked us not to look directly at the eclipse and I just followed the direction.

Niagara Falls is going to milk this event for everything they can get.
I bet the restaurants have a different menu with higher prices just for the day before and day of.
Good for them to cash in on the massive hype because the hospitality industry was decimated.

To add to that, they could have just checked the hotels in St. Catherines and then drive to the Falls and parked in a mall parking lot for the few minutes of the eclipse.
