One would think that an organization owned by the province of ontario would insist on their operators to set high labour standards, since the very same province sets the provincial labour standards for others to abide by. Apparently not. They're doing everything they can to prune out high cost permanent workers and replace them with very inexpensive contract and part time workers. They also recently reduced the seasonal contract workers wages by approx. $2.00/hr. I know people who work there, and there is much discontent. There was a demonstration recently by the CAW and LIUNA
Neither casino in NF is currently unionized, but wouldn't be surprised if they soon will be.

The Falls area is hurting because of the weak USA dollar and the USA economy. People don't have the $$$ to "waste" at places like casinos like in the past.

What happen to that guy who wants to walk on a tightrope across the Falls? Are they going to let him do it this year?

Thats right. The other reasons are no smoking inside, no free drinks and no loose slots. Seneca is getting much more action these days. Only disadvantage is the 30% witholding on hand payouts.

Recoverable almost in full if you have no other US income and file a return.

Certain conditions apply, your mileage may vary. Batteries not included.

No, its not necessarily recoverable in full. It depends on how much you win. You can have one big win and still pay tax on your 1040NR. If you have income above the basic exemption level, regardless of whether its earned by gambling or otherwise, its subject to U.S. tax.

Better that they are trying to be efficient, unlike so many government agencies that just don't care and overpay their staff. But they are happy to turn around and impose standards on business that make it harder to compete with global competition, if they think that will buy some votes.

Do you forget that Fallsview makes more than most top vegas casinos?
Where in the hell did you come up with that misinformation?

Frankly, I think the notion of having casinos in Ontario is cruel and sadistic, How many peoples lives have been ruined by their addiction to gambling? If the province can't balance their books without gambling revenue, then shame on them. The benefit of creating a small number of jobs is way offset by the money drawn out of the consumers hands, which could be buying other goods and services and creating additional jobs. There aren't many countries in the world that have legal casinos, and honestly I wish we weren't one of them. Of all the recent foreclosures in the US, I'd love to know what % were due to gambling losses. Nobody ever seems to talk about this, but its a real problem. Just think about on any given day, how much money is being sucked out of the consumers hands and into the casinos hands.

Well BU, you do have a point but for that matter, what about all the lives ruined by alcohol? I'd say more are ruined by the abuse of alcohol than by gambling.......

I know when I did a job in DFW at the race tracks they have set limits as to how much one can take out of their cash machines. This is supposed to help curtail the very problem you mentioned. I believe the limit was $200.00 via the ABM but oddly enough, I don't think there was a limit on cc advances.

I tend to agree however that the government should NOT have their hands in the casinos. This is kind of like creating a monopoly (illegal in all other areas). Now I think it should be regulated but not controlled by the government. But then again, I don't think the government should be involved in any business. Like Petro Canada, Power Generation, Canada Post, etc. But then again, I don't believe any politician should have any business holdings once they are elected to office but that will never happen.
