Cogeco highspeed provides free F-Secure. Has anybody had any
experience with that product? Compared to the free AVG?

From what I can see on the net, F-Secure provides 'Internet' security. It includes anti-adware and anti-spam as well as virus protection but their site was not clear about other protection.

AVG has just anti-virus unless you buy the better version, but it uses much less of your computer's resources.

F-Virus

I have tried twice the F-Secure program provoded free by Cogeco.
I do not like it. It slows the computer a lot, is not user friendly and does not provide adequate protection against malware and spyware.
Twice i got infected with a Trojan virus.

I am now back to Norton Internet Security. It's not perfect, buti feel better protected, and it doesn;t slow my computer as much as F-Secure.

I was able to buy Norton IS at Future Shop last week for only $39.95. it was on sale.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will pass on the free offer from Cogeco.

It's a resource hog.. I'd go for NOD32.. seems to be the least resource hungry one I've seen, and has been very effective.

I agree with Raydeon's assessment. It noticeably slowed my PC and it tends to rate in the bottom half of competitors in independent testing. I'm back to Norton AV 2008, Kaspersky and free AVG.
No AV is perfect.
I use free Avast and have had no problems with it since 9/2006 and I hit all the suspect sites.

Anything worth saving goes on an external HDD and usually twice a year I'll format and reinstall XP to clean out all the crap that accumulates when running Windows.... it's like getting a new PC. Everything flies again.
I have an old HDD with a clean version of XP, including all apps, browers, AV, etc, for this purpose.
I just swap drives, format, then transfer everything, XP, all apps, browers, AV, etc over to the HDD again from that old HDD and am up and running in about 30 minutes.

AV is personal

Use what you like - they all leapfrog each other in technology/performance every few years.

AVG is free and good but combine with some low resource spyware, use mozilla or opera with script protection turned on.

Never had a virus with this combination but occassionaly a few avg false alerts.
