I am having a problem with Explorer 7 which (maybe foolishly) I recently installed.

My computer now often is slow and hangs... when I check Task Manager, it tells me that a process called "iexplore.exe" is taking up 90 to 99% of my CPU!!!!

It even continues to hog the CPU if I shut Explorer down!!!

If I turn tell Task Manager to end the process, the computer returns to normal.

Any one know what the fuck is going on and offer a cure?

Or shall I just piss on Microsoft?

Thanks in advance.

Go to tools-> manage add ons.. see if you've got anything weird ones running you don't recognize and disable them.

Thanks. Did so.

They are all weird to me!!!

There are 2 that have no publisher details: "Research" and "Diagnose connection problems." All the others are Symantec, Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Adobe or Sun Microsystem... plus a whole bunch of ActiveX in the "Activex" folder and the "Add-ons that run without requiring permission" folder!?

Whatever what I just wrote means!!! ;)

IE 7 is a stable version and runs well on all my machines - suggest taht you delete completely and reinstall - should work well for you - if you are running MaCafee or another bloated Virus checker that could also be your problem.

Have the same problem here too Perry, I tried disabling a few IE add-on’s but it didn’t make any difference. IE7 seems really bloated and poorly done.. the fact that you cant move the toolbars around (unlike the previous version) without doing a registry hack is pretty pathetic.

IE7 is just too much of a resource hog!

This worked for me

PM and Binky,

I had the same problem and here's the fix that worked for me (I found it buried in the Microsoft release notes):

Open the Control Panel -> Internet Options

Go to the Advanced Tab and you will see a new option at the bottom called "Reset Internet Explorer settings". Click the Reset button and it will remove any offending incompatible addons that were inherited from a previous version of ie.

I have been using IE7 for 2 weeks now. The only problem I have is, when I open a new window, sometimes that window goes to the back and a prior window comes to the front. Other than that, it is pretty stable.

Buried? Microsoft drove me nuts! The problem is mentioned again and again in their help sites, but no one offered a sensible answer!!!

Many thanks. I did that. And in the midst of the routine I was linked to a Microsoft web page that informed me I had the wrong version of IE7 for my computer... I was invited to download the correct version.

(BTW, the window can be reached directly on IE from Tools > Internet Options > Advanced)

I did.

After about 15 minutes of downloads, updates, installations, etc. I rebooted and here I am again! Working fine now.

"iexplore.exe" is nice and quiet...

Which proves, once again, that there is much more to TERB than just penises and pussies!

I prefer Firefox.
get the ie tab extension and you can view IE pages only with this extension.
adblock
adblock filterset
noscript
and you're laughing when you surf with firefox.

ps - norton sucks
NOD32 + Comodo Firewall (or ZoneAlarm Free, if you're not patient with learning programs)

Perry,

I used the Control Panel way to get to the Internet Options because when I ran Internet Explorer the CPU was pegged near 100% and I couldn't access the menus in ie. This way you can do the fix without running ie.

Glad that it helped you even though it wasn't the same problem that I had.

By the way, I second Cobster: I always use firefox. I was only running ie to test a website I made for compatibility. It didn't work in ie6 so I was hoping that it would run in ie7 but no such luck. So I have to add an "only in firefox" message to the site.

got so fed up with IE 7. Downloaded FireFox this morning and it's been a breeze. Should have done it a long time ago!

Firefox 2.0 is a great improvement on 1.5.
I also installed IE7 and had lots of problems with inherited add-ons from previous version. IE7 deactivated himself some of them but in the end I got one or two I had to duel with to finally go through settings and reset to factory defaults, then installing new ones.
Then AAARGH froze all the time with Mouse Gestures add-on proposed. Finally found the Mouse Gestures add-on with a more stable version on developer website. Evening wasted, I was at one hair to delete IE7 and find a good old IE6 that I loved to hate but had to live with due to some sites that do not display very well in Firefox...
