Many years ago

So back in the days when we all had to borrow Dad's car, one of my buddies had a policy of charging 25 cents a ride. That was cool to pay for gas.
So he's dating this one girl and his buddy is dating the sister. So one night, we're all together and he's going to drive his GF home. The buddy asks if he can take the sister with them. He says sure, 25 cents.
He was going to the same place with his GF anyway.
So later in life, he retired at the ripe old age of 40 as a fairly wealthy fellow.
But he was still a cheap bugger back then.

My SO is a bartender... but the bar where she works is also a restaurant, so occasionally she has to fill in for a breakfast shift here or there... she says old couples are the ABSOLUTE worst. They'll come in to the restaurant sit down at a table and drink "bottomless cups" of coffee, stay for hours, maybe order breakfast, be a REAL PITA, and leave no tip what-so-ever.

I once went into a corner variety store back in the day when The Sunday Sun was 50cents in the box, however 65cents in the store. All I wanted was the paper. There was a long line up at the counter, so I skipped forward in the line and just dropped 50cents on the counter and left. (was in a hurry to go somewhere)

Two weeks later I happen to go back into same store. The owner was very upset and says to me "Hey, you owe me 15cents" And I do mean she was very visually upset... raising her voice at me etc.

Needless to say... I never ever went back to that store again.

I think the worst restaurant customers are a group of women - who all have to get separate checks because they are too cheap to just divide the bill by number of diners....

I had friends selling real estate. Seniors from Bathurst Wilson area would call to see downtown property! Then quickly become dis interested once arriving to listing. Asked to be dropped off at a corner downtown. Lol

You're frugle? Now that you're well off, splurge and buy yourself a dictionary so you can see how to spell frugal.

Sorry, nothing personal Doc. It was just too easy to jump on this one.

Just possible her minimum wage is bigger than their pensions. No one has a right to be a PITA, but old folks have earned respect, and it costs nothing to give it.

Don't disagree with you at all... OJ. My point is they were being rude at the same time. There IS a point in which respect starts to fade.

As always, just my nickels worth.:)

Don't you just love when people don't pay what they owe and then accuse others of being cheap.

Here we go...

I've worked as a waiter, so believe me I can start an entire board on restaurant customers. However, I did make some good coin doing it. I will say this though; I did consider myself one of the better waiters in the city (I've probably served many tebites in my time, and I know that I've served many 'dates' during my Yorkville days... actually I can remember at least twice serving MPAs that have been reviewed here in their 'civilian' lives... one that actually gave me her number).

As much as many waiters tend to complain about the tips that they receive, I would often challenge my colleagues to the service they gave. Yes, generally speaking, older customers and groups of women are less desired (low tips and asking for separate checks, respectively), but often because of these stereotypes, many waiters give these and other 'undesirable' customers lower levels of service, therefore justifying the lack of money made (This also includes 'hot-shots', and tables with young children... Waiters hate serving people who make a point of flaunting their 'status'). While some shy away from some tables, I embraced them all. What did this do for me? It made me a better percentage than others, and made me busy because I had both the 'undesireables' and 'desireables' requesting me. It's funny because the other staff always asked me how I made 50% more than they did.... Easy, I served and appreciated all of my customers for who they are. Funny, because that's the same je ne sais pas that separates the 'legends' from others in the TERB related industries. Hmmm... aren't they both service industries??

I'm an obsessive comparison shopper.

For anything over 300 dollars I haggle unless it's a big chain store.

I look at it this way: First of all better in my pocket than in their pocket. Then, at my work somebody always pesters me about discounts, free parts, free service, etc... So if I need to take this shit every day then other people can to.

I did pay her the measly 15cents.

The point is had she just mentioned it to me casually or asked nicely... I would have been glad to say oooops I'm sorry and pay her and not think much of it.

Fact is if I had known the paper was 65cents I would have thrown down three quarters that day instead of two... and still have left cause I was in a hurry.

It was the way she came on too me... all excited and bitterly yelling at me the very second I came in the store... like that 15cents was the end of the world... and like I did it on purpose or something. AND She remembered that stupid lousy 15cents two weeks later.

Sorry but to me that's pretty frigin cheap.

Not knocking you, but you were originally in the wrong. You payed what you thought was the 'going rate', and were wrong. You owed the balance, and the owner asked for it (albiet rudely). Chalk that one up to misunderstanding. Neither was being cheap.

Look at the irony. She remembered it for 2 weeks and may have forgotten about it. But you still remember it 15 years later!

Cheap is right, cheap works. Cheap clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Cheap, in all of its forms; cheap for life, for money, have marked the true meaning of independence.

Frugality on the other hand is for sissy who could not be cheap to the core!!

BTW, you should lavish your love to someone special, including your favorite SP/MPAs, so long she does not make you to spend on her like there's no tomorrow.

Or put in bluntly....now that I am well off, I can choose to be cheap:eek:

I hear what your saying. However it was only 15cents for gosh sakes. Had the situation been reverse and I was store owner... next time she came in I would have not mentioned it at all or simply and nicely said to her... "Oh btw for future reference the paper is 65cents not 50, OK?" She acted like that 15cents was the end of the world. That too me rings of just plain cheapness.

On the other hand I do get it... some people when they are in their minds ripped off they feel violated ... even if it's only a penny... it's the principle not the amount I guess.
