Depends on the type of vehicle you have. You could really screw up some of your engine sensors and electrical system if they get wet. Cover them up... and just be careful. It's almost like having sex... but in that case you want her to get wet. :p

Does it say it is an engine shampoo? If so, it is safe to use. Keep in mind though the stuff is pretty harsh, so leaving it on for less time than recommended isn't a bad idea. It is petroleum based, so it is easily displaced by water and is why you apply it to a dry engine. Just use a light stream from a garden hose to rinse it off, not a high pressure washer. The weatherpack fittings on the new cars are pretty good. Most of them triple seal and are held on by a clip too.

The only real part you should cover up is your ignition coil (where all the spark plug wires originate from). Usually the airbox opening is well protected and the duct is behind a headlight or fender, but if not, cover it up with a plastic bag.

You can put engine shampoo on everything in your engine compartment including the alternator and you can hose everything off with water. The trick is to dry everything with air after you rinse with water and BEFORE you start the engine to prevent any shorts in your electrical system. Do not start your engine with all the wires soaking wet.

Use a petroleum solvent based engine cleaner. It will not harm anything
It will eat the rubber grommets and O-rings. CTC is the worst offender for selling S H I T that does more harm than good. Carb cleaners eat away at the rubber, and can take paint off. Brake cleaner is worse, and I've seen it eat flexlines.

Use a biodegradeable cleaner, and it won't hurt your driveway or lawn.

Water won't hurt your alternator. I drove a delivery truck with a radhose leak spraying into the alternator for 25 minutes, and no damage done.
