Edmonton is getting rid of most of their speed and red light cameras

I hope Toronto eventually does the same thing.
These cameras are a just a money grab.

If the city was really so concerned about saving lives, they would install speed bumps on high risk streets

Speed cameras work though. Most people in Durham know where the cameras are and slow down. They are mainly in front of schools that are on main roads you can’t put speed bumps on. They rotate them but people will still slow down in those sections even when cameras are not there.

They also generate passive income.

They are annoying but they do their job.

Australia actually saw a rise in fatal car accidents after they installed speed cameras

Here's another study from Arizona that shows speed cameras had no effect on car crashes

I use Waze a lot more now. Not so much for route guidance, but for speed camera and other warnings. Still trying to decide if it’s more helpful or too distracting.

I didn't say they stopped accidents. I didn't talk about accidents at all
But reducing accidents is what their purpose is.
If they're not reducing accidents, then whats the point in having them??

And how do you know they are not? It would help to have studies from here in Ontario. Just sayin'. People's driving in other places of the world is not necessarily the same as people's driving here. Here, they may be reducing accidents. You can't say that here in Ontario, they are not doing just that.

And the Arizona study shows an increase after the cameras were removed if I read correctly, although briefly. It is “convenient” that the accidents that went up, by a lot? After the cameras were removed were because of more cars on the road but the accident while the cameras were there were not for the same reason.

I can only go by what I see. That is the only evidence I have at the moment. And that tells me that they are working.

I visit a friend in Calgary fairly often, and they have a ton of speed cameras there but only in and around school zones / parks. People 100% slow down for them. If you're driving and everyone around you slows down then I do too since I figure there's a camera they know about and I missed the signs for it.

It's the same in Durham in my experience. People slow down for them so they do their job. It's only a cash grab if you're speeding past schools.

Speed cameras are great to an extent...schools and parks where kids are present most of the time (kids are tend to be careless)...but assholes who know where they are still speed up where there is none... we need speed cameras in every corner for it to work.

John Moore, the morning host on CFRB 1010, once related a story of how he got a ticket for speeding in a school zone at around 3:00am or 4:00am in the morning. He understood the need for low speed limits in a school zone, but felt there could be some flexibility at those hours.

Yeah. They work at making people slow down to below the posted limit. That is once they memorize where they are located. Thats real safe 🙄

A ticket 30days after the infraction does nothing to promote road safety. They are a cash grab, and nothing else. They can't even identify the actual driver, just the plate owner gets the fine.
They are a piss poor replacement for an actual cop.

This was all dealt with before when Harris was premiere.
