I am having a very hard time trying to find an eBook reader. I am getting bamboozled with proprietary file formats etc.

I downloaded the Microsoft ebook reader and couldn’t figure out how to add a file to the library. I couldn’t understand that package. I then tried Google. It is too integrated with the browser to be of any use. Can anyone help me cut to the chase and get a reader that is simple. lets me annotate and perhaps has an option to have the ebook read as audio?

I want to download public domain ebooks. What is the best file format and what is the best software for viewing?:frusty:

I had a hard time finding .lit files. I ended up uninstalling MS Reader as it didn't seem very easy to open various file formats. In fact I couldn’t figure out how to open even one file accept the help file that came with the software. The help file wasn’t very helpful either. I have spent many hours today trying to get answers to this issue. strange but there doesn’t seem o be any descent eBook readers that support a multiplicity of non proprietary files and allow annotating in any easy way and also provide audio. All eBook readers seem to want to look like printed material (kind of dumb) they should be designed at making it easier for people to read the material.
So I would like to ask anyone who really like reading via eBooks what are the features you like and what are the best practises?

My terms are getting confused. I am looking for a software eBook reader. I want to read public domain books and authors. It seems most ebook readers have proprietary file formats. This makes things difficult. i want to take a project Gutenberg file (what ever is the easiest) and read it like a book(with in limits and if there is something interesting annotate it. At the moment copying and pasting into MS word and reading and annotation this way is what I am doing. It just doesn't feel right. It seems awkward. I am no further ahead and i spent a day on this. I can’t believe how frustrated I am.

Try Calibre. It supports most formats and comes with a reader
