I have spent a lot of time in Costa Rica and have been in earthquakes up to magnitude 5.7 more or less. Lots and lots of quakes around 3 or less. Mostly you don't notice those. Although one time I happened to be sitting on a hard chair and a magnitude 3 point something hit and it was almost the epicenter... it felt like someone had kicked the chair. I was asleep when a 5.7 hit and the bed jumped across the floor a little bit, on an old shag carpet type surface. I ran to the door but no one else paid much attention and life went on. They build everything there to take those sorts of quakes, or to put it another way anything that is not built to stand a magnitude 6 quake is long gone.
