I just came across a video link on the front page of Yahoo... "Learn how to spot early signs of Alzheimers disease"... jeeeeez!!

no thank you.. I do not want to know if I have alzhimers and did not bother viewing it.

From my understanding, there is no cure for this disease... Why would anyone want to know if they have alzheimers at an early stage? I'm guessing so they can enjoy the little time they have?

This is something my family is going through for the second time, this time with my father. As sad as it is, I am glad we know as there are some drugs that can slow the progress of the disease.

My Mum is 84 and has dementia. There are drugs that vastly improve the quality of life. Believe me you want to know ASAP so you will not end up in massive depression. These drugs also slow down some of the effects.

You are correct there is no cure.

...:)

early detection essential

the earlier you can detect the disease the better prepared you can be to handle the eventual effects of the disease. My mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers about 5 years ago, she was in her late 50's.

The comments about drugs that can slow progress is true but also with early detection it makes it possible to organize other aspects of life including legal matters, personal matters, future care etc.

By the time my mom was diagnosed we had so many questions and emotions to deal with we didn't set everything up the right way before she progressed to a point where she is not capable of making her own choices. luckily for us the basic legal stuff was done right.

nobody wants to be confronted with their own mortality.

I hope that a cure for this cursed disease is found before it becomes
a risk for most of us.

It is like a punch in the stomach when a loved one doesn't know who
you are anymore and you see in their eyes that
they know in some moments of lucidity that their world is falling apart
before them. And then a profound sadness covers their face.

It is called the long goodbye.

I wish that governments and organizations would devote massive amounts
of money to find a cure for this.

With the aging population, it probably will soon become an epidemic.
