This is a great technology forum. Great info guys. I will be back in Toronto tomorrow and have a meeting set with Bree of Vixens.

I am pretty computer literate, but no expert. I travel a lot by air. I enjoy watching TV and movies in the air. Tivo takes care of my TV shows but I want to RIP DVD's and play back on my laptop.

What software is needed? No plans or desires to burn the DVD's. Just RIP, play and delete.

Thanks

What you want to do is technically ilegal. 321 Studios had a program called Xcopy untill they lost in court. this is still available and will copy some movies. DVD Shrink can be found on the web and this works well. the problem is not coping the DVD it's removing the copy protection so that the movie will play. If you just copy the files the movie won't play. Some Movies can't be copied but most can with one of the two above programs. Good Luck

Xcopy is ancient now and might work on 1 out of 10 movies.
DVD Shrink or personally I prefer AnyDVD which is updated on a regular basis. The freebie expires after 30 days. It's worth paying for.

I use Anydvd and Nero and that's really easy.

I've tried using DVD Fab Decrypter; but, once it's ripped onto the hard drive I have no clue how to compress it and then write it to a blank dvd afterward and I've not been able to find any info on the web re how to do this.

If you have a mac use MAC THE RIPPER. You can download it for free, its easy to use and you can rip any DVD with any regional code. I rented the complete sopranos from the first season up to the latest and put them on my hard drive and watch them when I fly. I havn't come across a DVD that MAC the ripper cant rip!

Dvd fabdecrypter is good, but if you do a search in this forum about it and what I said, it'll make you think twice. So I don't use it anymore.

DVDFabDecrypter will only copy a full DVD without changing its compression ratio. It will break copyright on DVDs that DVDShrink can't. But if you want to recompress down to a DVD5, you can just take the output from DVDFab and put it into DVDShrink to recompress it, and even do re-authoring.

If you got a dual-layer DVD-R, then you won't need to even recompress and you can just use Nero to copy the non-compressed output of DVDFab to DVD.

That is why I use DVDfab PLATINUM. With this, you do not need DVD Shrink as it gives you an option to copy it to DVD5 or DVD9.. It is a great download if you can find the latest cracked version to download

Yeah, but I'm trying not to pirate things that I don't have to. Both basic DVDFab and DVDShrink are free for personal use, and it's not a huge difference doing it this way.

That makes a lot of sense.... you have a problem with using pirated software, yet you have no problem using free software that illegally copy DVD's?

Before you respond, keep in mind that it is technically illegal to make a back up copy of a DVD (for personal use)

I was under the impression if you own said dvd copying for backup and personal use was acceptable?
And yes I do have the platinum version which works great.

Firewall issue? Only if your downloading DVDs as a torrent, not sure where this comes into play. Cobster, your usually right on with this stuff?

Unless firewall doesnt allow him to download the program?:) to burn backups.

It's breaking the encryption that's illegal, not the actual copying for personal use.
