I had a chance to catch Dune last night and i have to say it was pretty good. Having seen the other movies i would have to say i enjoyed this one the most. There is a large middle eastern influence in it as you can see by the customs and dress of the fremon. The choice of cast was actually surprising to me. The special effects were not over done and the acting was good as well. Spoiler....... Its a two parter and if you've read the series it could be a successful trilogy the could last fore years

That's the intention of the author.

I honestly didn't get that when I read the books years ago and I don't remember picking that up in the movies that I watched but in this movie it was way more pronounced

they really stretched out the movie. apparently they are making 3 or 4. it was a bit to slow for me compared to the first one.

My fuck! It took me this long to get out to see it in IMAX.

What an incredible experience.

I can’t think of something I’ve seen in the theatre since somewhere in the LOTR trilogy that made me want to immediately buy another ticket after my ears stopped ringing.

This film MUST be seen on the really big screen.

I read Dune as a kid, then re-read the series this year, and never liked the Lynch film.

This was almost perfect for me, and the friend I went with who doesn’t like sci-fi and fantasy, and knew nothing about Dune going into it

As a kid, I don’t remember who I thought they were descended from.

I mean, if I were guessing what 14 year old me would have pictured for people living in the desert, I think it would be some amalgamation of Sand People and Arabians a la Lawrence of Arabia.

When I re-read it this year, there’s so much Arabic in the Fremen stuff, I can’t believe I missed it if I did as a kid. I don’t remember if he outright calls them descendants, but linguistically, there is clear overlap.

It’s not a huge stretch for that universe.

I feel like it’s only a few books in when we meet the secret space Jews.

I thought the David Lynch film was a deliciously bizarre hot mess. However there were other sci-fi/fantasy films from the era that I enjoyed more, namely The Quiet Earth and Spaceballs (Jews in Space)!

Except for The Empire Strikes Back, Spaceballs is better than every Star Wars film.
