DUMP/ GARBAGE SITE Question

Spring is here and I've got a lot of junk to throw away. Mostly big materials (broken appliances/sofa/drywall materials) and some small but heavy (such as car batteries, paint - they are considered hazardous waste by the city). I've heard there is a dump site where they weigh your car when you get in and weigh your car when you get out to charge you a fee (how much?), does anyone know where that is in the GTA??? Or should I call those JUNK REMOVAL guys to come - would that cost more $$$ than the dump site??

Not sure how much it costs to dump it all yourself but I called Junkit and 1800-got-junk on different occassions and both were fantastic. They were on time, fast and reasonably priced. For me it was worth the money just because of the convenience, they came and took it all out and all I had to do was pay some $$. They based the rates on how much you are having removed so can't really say how much it would cost you but I know that each time they gave me an estimate and my actual cost was under that, this could be because I overestimated how much I had but either way it was proffessional of them to let me know it was less and save me some money.

Usually, it's a lot cheaper to take stuff to the transfer stations yourself. Check with the city about large pickups, you can call to arrange p/u of large items like furniture or appliances (well at least they used to). But like Sheik says, anything with a lot of metal, like appliances, will disappear real quick by the scrap metal hunters. (Make sure to take off the door from dryers, frigs etc for kids safety and keep the city off your butt.) I put out an old dryer two weeks ago and it was gone within 15 minutes.

Leave your appliances out at the curb, they will be picked up within a few days by scrap metal guys who drive around the city looking for metal to recycle.
Heck they don't even wait for you to get them to the curb. I had a friend help me move a few appliances out to the top of my driveway at midnight, figuring I'd call around in the morning to find a scrapper who wanted to pick them up. By 6am someone had come up my driveway and taken them.

Not sure whether I was supposed to be happy that they were gone with no effort on my part or ticked off because they basically stole them from me. How would they know whether those pieces were outgoing or incoming?

I put out an old fridge last spring at like 3 or 4 in the afternoon. It was gone the next morning .... not only that though the guys who took it left a biz card in my mail box. It just said "Free Scrap Removal" and a number... no name or anything... so I gave it to my landlady. Sure enough some weeks later she called and left a voice mail that she was scrapping an old washer. It was gone in less then two hrs.

If you have lots of stuff to get rid of and don't want to pay labour costs to have someone come get it another option is to rent a bin. They will come drop the bin in your drive and you can fill it up (there are different sizes avail) then they come pick it up and bring to transferr stn or dump. They will charge you by wieght and a drop off and pick up fee.

These days it's greenly good to park your discards at the curb for a day or so, to let the drive-by shoppers give the good bits a second home. Stuff moves faster if you add notes like "works fine, wife just hates the colour" on appliances and gadgets. Then trundle the remainder to the Transfer stations. Take a book though, line-ups can be long.

Junk yards pay for old car batteries. I sold one for $2.00 once - better than paying to have it removed. The rest of the hazardous waste can be taken to a transfer station. They accept hazardous waste on Saturday mornings and one day during the week. The City may still pick up hazardous waste for free - they called it the toxic taxi.

you will have to separate the hazardous waste they will not take it at the transfer stations, you are also restricted as to hours of operation . Check the website for hours and locations they will also have the rules

Wouldn't that fee kinda equate to the labour cost you were trying to avoid?

The bin is nice, the biggest problem is keeping your neighbours from doing a midnight dump in it on ya.

Somewhere but not here.
I left an old mcriowave that fried out at the curb and it was gone within a day. They realized I cut off the cord and brought it back the next day, of course after garbage trucks were gone for another 2 weeks.

If you go to the transfer station yourself the cost is about 90.00 per tonne which is a lot of household stuff. The question is do you want to pay to have someone else do the work or save some money but use sweat equity.

No. If you hire a junk removal company they send a couple of guys with a truck and you pay them by the hr (min 4 hrs in most cases) for the two men and the truck. And still also pay the wieght charge.

If you rent a bin in most cases the drop off and pick up fee is less then the hourly rate for two men and truck.
