I've visited Canada a few times now and have been floored by the hospitality and friendliness.

But something I've been afraid to ask, for SPs and donations, is the expectation that it's in Canadian dollars? Is it a big deal to leave the equivalent in US dollars (with appropriate tip of course) or do SPs not like that?

It's just a pain in the ass to exchange it, and there is a fee involved. Unless they travel to the states. A lot of us aren't going down there if we can help it for obvious reasons. Why not just bump up the donation and explain it that way?

Yep, any Sp’s who mention it on their websites or ads say $US accepted at 1:1 ratio, so it’s well worth your while to use $Canadian.

If you don’t want to do it before you leave home any Canadian bank will exchange your $US easily and without fuss. And if you ask they will give you a little white envelope to use for the lady :)

Keep in mind the power of the USD compared to the loonie. For example, $160 CDN is about $115 USD. So, it would be in your best interest to either exchange money or hit an ATM and withdraw a couple of hundred Canadian. Even with the fees, you'll be saving a lot of money in your pooning adventures.

And, as @Jenesis points out, some providers might not like the USD for the fact that they cannot tell if its legit...and it is a slight pain to exchange it. But, I'm also sure that if you paid $160USD, most SPs would be happy with that (since it works out to something like $220 CDN)...

Use a bank machine, as in a real bank. Tons of them. Compared to the price difference the exchange rate is a minor cost. And you can pull out exactly what you need.

Banks are incredibly safe here.

Use an ATM, get Canadian dollars, just as we would when travelling in any other country and withdraw that country's currency. Easy and safe. US dollars are not universally accepted in Canada.

Regards to Canadian Tire money. You just have to explain that guy in the Tam O'Shanter is our King. He looks more like a king than the real guy, so half the time they buy it.

I won’t accept USD. I have no way of knowing if it is real or not. It is not money I am used to dealing with daily while I know what goes into CDN money to help counterfeiting.
Have you ever had clients try to pay with counterfeit bills? Just wondering.

I’d never thought of this before but I can see how it could be a problem for SP’s.

This was a problem several years ago in a few Canadian cities, before the US updated their $100’s. I know of one SP who was burned, I’m sure there were more.
