Spare me any moral judgements....

Just tell me if there is a safe "spyware-free" program and service where I can still find and download good commerical music - FOR FREE!

In the past I used Ares and Limewire, I dont want to bother with the downloads/install of the programs just to find out that its irrelevant or "not worth the time" anymore.

Thanks in advance.

Limewire really buggered up my system. I won't use that again.
I second that.

About 3 years ago I attempted to download Limewire and to make a long story short I was on the phone with Dell trying to figure out how to get all the programs back that had been lost.

Limewire screwed up my cpu so bad that I had to completley reset the system losing everything I had on it.

I use MP3Suite. It's a pay service (unlimited downloads) but I've had no problems with spyware... unlike my old nemesis Kazaa!!

It slowed up my system to a granny dial up from high speed ,which I had .
I removed it and it went back to normal.

Torrents are the safest way to get music now.
Torrents are set up to filter out bogus and suspect files.

Soulseek, a p2p, used to be good in the past but I'm not sure how it is faring now.

Did you really subscribe? If so, weren't you concerned when the only payment it took was PayPal- the bank account of pirates! Were you able to see what you were buying into before you agreed? Is there any reviews of it on the web? It seems to be a very, very small operation (only 470 google hits!)... The site claims acclamations from CNN, Cnet, NBC... but, nothing of such is found and the site provides no proper documentation. Also, there 100% Satisfaction Guarantee says NOTHING about getting your money back!

I just don't take risks with torrents anymore. with what I have on my HD now, it wouldn't be worth the risk of losing or corrupting any of it.

with over 12 Million songs, mp3suite.com claims to be a LEGAL and low monthly service with UNLIMITED song and movie downloads. I looked into it and frankly, it looks like a pay-for torrent site. Here is a recent blog review of it's services:

An unlimited lifetime membership at MP3Suite goes for $34.44, which gives you an unlimited amount of songs and albums to download for life. Or if that kind of commitment is too much, you can have two years of access for $1.37 a month or $32.88 or 1 year of access for $2.49 a month or $29.88. Add $14.95 to any of these memberships for unlimited movie downloads. The downloads are compatible with all MP3 players, including iPods, and the membership can be cancelled at any time. The site also provides free access to several media players.

Third that. Motion carried.

I'm on a Mac and found a great Limewire alternative called Frostwire. There's a Windows version as well (http://www.frostwire.com/?id=downloads). It looks and works exactly like Limewire, but without the constant crashing and freezing.

And, as someone else mentioned, bittorrent is good too.

Generally, if I'm looking for one song -- Frostwire
Entire collection? -- bittorrent

Hope that helps.

I would recommend you do some research on that LEGAL statement. No way that's possible.

I used to use ARES but curious if you have used it in the past month?

Is there still a large database of music for it?

I think all P2p programs use the same underlying p2p network, its just a user preferance on interface they prefer. (Limewire, Kazaa, Ares.etc)

Gee...

...I use limewire and have never had problems....I recently (relatively...about 6 months ago) discovered it thanks to a friend, and I am hooked. Best thing since sliced bread. I go around jotting down songs that I think of or hear during the day and download pretty much every night...

Guess I'm lucky...

Torrents: throttled more often than not. not-riaa safe either. peer guardian will help but isn't foolproof.
P2P: there is a limewire that is spyware free. Shareaza is another example.
My suggestion? use rapidshare or megaupload or mediafire.
i.e. doing a google search for slipknot rapidshare turned up this link (among many others):
http://rapidshare.com/users/SJVDZ8

It usually isn't this easy. Generally you'll need to poke around in blogs dedicated to the particular genre or band you're interested in. But it works. Just fine.

Limits? downloads per day. bandwidth. nothing else.
