Antonius Clarke has lived around Jane and Finch his whole life. He went to Westview Centennial Secondary School, he studied sociology at York, and mounted a failed bid to represent Ward 8 four years ago. His experience: politicians show up during elections, then disappear into the horizon.

So, on Monday, the 29-year-old tried something new, inviting mayoral candidates for a tour of his home turf, an area often associated with poverty, crime and neglect.

“I’m trying to give these candidates an opportunity to change this cycle,” he told reporters outside a plaza on Jane Street, south of Finch. “There is a group of people really in need of them, and it’s a gold mine.”

It was certainly a bonanza for Doug Ford, who was showered with support and affection from virtually everyone he came across during the tour, which also included Olivia Chow.

The walk through a collection of rundown Toronto Community Housing buildings was organized by the Inner City Union, a local group trying to drum up more civic engagement. Mr. Clarke said the group will host John Tory on another walk later this week, because a scheduling conflict prevented him from attending Monday’s event, held exactly one week before the Oct. 27 election.

Mr. Ford was an energizer bunny as soon as he stepped out of an RV with his face emblazoned on the side. He did a beeline for outstretched hands, as young men approvingly called out “bop, bop, bop.” Suddenly, he was inside New Style Hair Design, crouching between two women with towels around their hair, giving the cameras a thumbs up.

At 8 Dune Grass Way, the two politicians walked past an unravelled emergency fire hose that spilled out onto the floor. They stopped before an exposed set of pipes in the wall. “This is unacceptable,” said Mr. Ford. “We’ve got to do a complete audit of the building.” At 40 Turf Grass Way, it looked like a security camera had repeatedly been spray-painted and cleaned. Another building had a leaky hallway ceiling.

At one point, Mr. Ford disappeared into a unit. “You don’t have to worry about me,” he declared. “I could come here at 1 o’clock in the morning. And as long as you have a Ford Nation shirt, you’re safe.”

The tour included a stop at a mural that honoured 12 local youth who had been killed over the years. Mr. Clarke said the mural hid bullet holes, a contention that was disputed by Barry Rieder, a minister with the Jane Finch Community Ministry.

Ms. Chow, meanwhile, would linger at doorways even as the cameras continued on with Doug Ford. She told one resident about her plans to expand after-school programs and other support for youth. Earlier in the day, she suggested a grading system could improve the condition of privately owned buildings. But at Jane and Finch, as children kept clamouring for Ford selfies in a recreation centre, Ms. Chow found herself edged outside of the frame.

Mr. Rieder, the minister, would later remark that people’s enthralment with the Fords was more based on celebrity, and less on what the brothers had actually done in their favour. “Rob Ford never voted for any community grants,” he said. “The community voted for Mike Harris, thinking they were going to get jobs. Little did they know many of their social assistance was going to be cut.”

And yet, ladies flocked to Doug Ford as he made his way back to the plaza. They proudly pinned Doug Ford for mayor buttons on their shirts and waved his campaign literature to cars driving by. “This is who stand up for us. We got to stand up for him,” one woman said.

I'm not sure now. The article is pretty critical of Ford, yet your headline lauds him.

All I see is a local pastor deriding him, Ford pontificating about things that haven't been done again, as if this is a new thing, and actually showing how little was done despite the hiring of Jones by them.

Curious what the point was of posting this. To support Doug? Or be sarcastic with the headline?

As long as you have a Ford Nation t-shirt you're safe? Spoken like a true thug.

Maybe the poster is being sarcastic. I doubt he's part of the Ford's rimming crew.

Did I ever say I am a Doug Ford fan?

Did I ever say I am going to vote for him?

I have been calling John Tory a lie-yer because I know he is.

And just because I call John Tory a lie-yer it doesn't mean I am pro-Doug Ford.

BTW what is John Tory Campaign platforms on Jane and Finch? Have he visited or canvassed in Jane and Finch? Is he and his camp still lying about there is a LRT connection to Jane and Finch?

Not that I'm a Chow fan, but how would Ford fair if they toured Church and Wellesley?

There's been a lot of debate about "affordable housing" in the Toronto election campaign. Do they talk much about "affordable housing" in Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill, etc.?

If I am not mistaken the housing price is close to 40% more in Toronto for any comparative locations.

Cheaper housing cost and less talks on "affordable housing" I guess.

I know first hand that many extended families in Brampton pool their money to buy a house. That is why it is not unusual to see 10 people living in the same house. I guess that is one form of "affordable housing".

I think Chow has sew up the gay vote, yes? BTW: I heard that the "Gay Village" is changing to more mainstream.
Depending on who you talk to I guess I just wonder how John Tory fairs if he toured Church and Wellesley?

How many residents in the "Gay Village"l support John Tory's plan to removing funding on Pride Parade because of QuAIA?

And how many don't?

7 gay guys, 4 with partners at my work place.

5 are voting Tory, 3 of the partners. All are home owners. And live in various parts of the city.

Man are you going to be pissy come tuesday. Judging from the advance poll turnout, and the high numbers in areas where Tory is polling high, real pissy.
Two newspaper endorsements. The Star has printed more positive Tory articles recently, including Royson James today endorsing Tory.

Chow making one last concerted attack on Tory at Queen's Park today and sounded pathetic.

Doug, despite his own twisting and lying making no dent.

Boy are you going to be pissy.......

Agreed. That was an idiotic thing for him to say (what an a-hole).

I already voted for Tory (Dofo had just voted at the same advance polling station last week when I got there).

Chow should've remained as an MP if she wants to fight child poverty and youth unemployment in the city, no matter how noble these causes are, but there's only so much that a Mayor can do, especially an NDPer like her. However, I've discovered some nice things about her since this campaign.

My parents were supposed to immigrate to Canada in the late 50's, I was supposed to be born here. My parents application was denied when John Diefenbaker became Prime Minister. At the time many Italian families shared a home. The Conservatives rolled back the clock, they considered Italians niggers (harsh but true). It changed the political landscape with Italo-Canadians voting as a block for the Liberals.

Certainly not in a negative way. A lot of the family breadwinners start out working two jobs in the most menial positions. Work their asses off too! And when you combine say 3 breadwinners plus one or two moms working income (with one home with the kids) the money can actually add up pretty quick.

They aren't the ones gaming the system.

She isn't a bad person at all. She has her "wheelhouse" and that is childrens issues.

She is quite good at it. Tory could and perhaps should find her a position with the city where she can put that passion to work.

And I still think Stintz was wrong to leave. She should have stayed on as a councillor and TTC head to oversee the new transit construction. That would have landed her the Mayor's chair in eight years.

More than 70%?

I didn't think it would be that high...........my apology to the lie-yer John Tory. (Hopefully he and City of Toronto employ some capable litigation lawyers)

Pissy come Tuesday?

Pissy because I will be shocked and surprised?

Haven't you ever read my posts?

You never read any of my posts I spelled out I predict John Tory will win despite the facts of all his lying and flip-floppings............his two main opponents are so weak.
