My neighbor has a real friendly dog, which I like.

Not being a dog owner, can my fellow Terbites give me advice on what doggy treats I should have on hand for their visits?

I obviously want something that doggy loves, but that his owner will like because it's healthy and good for the pup?

All I can think of is Milkbone? Do they still make this stuff?:)

Milkbones

are still made. They come in sizes and flavors or flavours..
Get the plain ones then play dumb like you are dog clueless.
This allows you to talk to her about the dog bones while you are actually talking about the truth which is you want to bone her.

ps. the pet food aisle is the largest section in most grocery stores.

Dried liver treats sold by the bag.

They have less calories than biscuits and can be broken into watermelon seed sized pieces.

My dog LOVES them!!

As you have stated, not being a dog owner, I would strongly suggest you ask the owner what , if any, treats you can have on hand for their dog. The majority of dog owners that I know of have their pets on a scheduled and controlled diet. It doesn't hurt to ask and the dog owner would greatly appreciate your offer as well.

If you are an occasional treater, I would suggest soft treats rather than hard treats like milkbone. One suggestion is ritz cheeze crackers. One unsalted cracker will be a real treat for the doggie. You can break it up into 5 or 6 pieces, this will work well if the dog can do tricks.

Well said Natalie....Some dogs can eat anything a la Marley & Me, while others have very strict diets to I.B.S., Allergies (gluten free), etc.

And yes, Milkbones are perhaps one of the worst treats to give your pup!!

I had dogs most of my life, am still a dog person, and always make sure to have pig ears on hand for friends dogs. They are the perfect treat. Good for teeth, not manufactured so there is no crap ingrediants in them. You can get them in different sizes - smaller ones for puppies. Bonus is the dog can smell them, so the moment you come into range the dog is all happy to see you! I've used these on a few occassions to gain a dogs trust when meeting a new "dog person" for the first time. Big hit & safe.

One thing... always get more than one. You'd be surprised how quick a dog can demolish one of these things!
