Does anyone know where I can buy these prepaid Visa cards?

These also come with activation fees and/or monthly fees as well. Check into that before spending the money on them to see whether it's worth it to you.

I would not mind a reasonable fee. I am only comfortable using my cards on the internet via PayPal. I have often turned away from a purchase because of no PayPal. I carry a high limit on my cards, and worry about the grief of sorting out a possible fraudulent use. It happened to me once. A prepaid with a small amount on it would be perfect.

You buy them for whatever their face price is, pay the $6.95 or so activation, and then another $3.95 also comes off each month (some give you a certain time frame before that charge comes off). And you can't use them like a gift card, in that you can't apply them to a purchase worth more than the card is. My wife gave me a Vanilla card at Christmas a couple years ago and it was the biggest pain in the ass to use. To get rid of the last 4 dollars and change on it before it got eaten up by the monthly fee, I went to the gas station, and put the exact amount of gas in. They also aren't reloadable.

website coming soon
Canada post and money mart also has reloadable cards

whenever I want to get rid of the amount left on the card I donate it to one of the charities listed on canadahelp.org plus many charities have online websites with one-time donation options.

If you've already got a card (i.e. a credit rating) why wouldn't you just get a second card from your bank (or whoever) with a $500-$1000 limit. No fees, pay it off monthly so no interest, and your exposure is limited to the card limit.

Not sure what the advantage of a prepaid is?

I would imagine that the main advantage of the prepaid card is the anonymity - just like a hobby phone. Particularly useful if you want to do an outcall and not have the hotel charges show up on your monthly credit card statement.

BMO does a pre paid 'travel' Mastercard.
You can order it on line and has your name embossed on it. Reloadable via internet banking or transfer from account if you are with bmo.
$5.95 a year fee. I've had no probs with mine.
I use it for Paypal, Ticketmaster, etc. I just prefer paying upfront these days and have had my credit cards possibly compromised twice over the last few years.

Just to help me understand this strange new cashless world: What credit is involved in a pre-paid credit card? From the user's point of view, is it not just a debit card with its own restricted account?

Lol, that's true. I buy them to make instant payments. I'm not a fan of credit and if i ever get a credit card i wouldnt use it because i need it.... I'd just use it to build my credit. I try not to live beyond my means. But a lot of online shopping requires a credit card too.... Although there are a lot of places that won't accept it. Even my phone company will decline the card in their automated system. I have to speak to a representative and have them put it in.
