Do you need a License to be a Hairstylist at a Salon?

By law, do you require a license to work at a hair salon? No, I'm not thinking about cutting hair like the Zohan, but had a conversation with a friend who asked me last night, I told her I will get back to her after I consult some of my friends.....

If one works without a license and an inspection is done at the salon, who gets into trouble (stylist or the owner) and what are the possible consequences (fines or city sues to close down store?).

I am sure LOTS of places, the stylists do not have their license but she is just wondering about the repecussions since the owner of a salon never asked her about her license (Yeah, I wondered why too) but have seen her work.

Thanks guys!

The Gov. is cracking down on people cutting hair out of their homes or doing visits to peoples homes to cut hair. The want you to pay taxes. Some municipalities require you to have a business permit to cut hair.

If a stylist is caught working without papers, both the salon and the stylist is fined. It could be that inspections are done so infrequently that even if caught and a fine is paid, the salon owner is way ahead in the game.
